There's plenty of room for more then one Corvette here, especially wearing chromed reverse rims.

Not sure if that is Don Gist. It may be but I have him in a 59 and a 62 but not a 56/57. You may more info on it than I do.

Jim, I don’t know if it’s Don Gist but the colors are like the ones that he used and I found a picture of what I believe is the same car and it was running at Sunshine Drag strip which is near St Petersburg, Florida. That track opened in 1960 from what I could find.

Jason you may be correct and color combination may be similar but the BMP throws me. I believe MP came along in 1964 in the NHRA and Gist was driving his 62 in that era I believed. You could be correct though. I thought the earliest reference I had to him was 59 but he may have had an earlier model that I never ran across.

Jim, your recollection of the date the origin of Modified Production classes coincides with my own.

Jim and Chuck, thinking about what you both said maybe it was someone else nearby that had seen Don race and was inspired by his car and color combination. Regardless it was a cool car and they made some effort to make it a serious racer.

Jason, I looked through my notes (which may not tell the whole story) and he owned a 1960. I have a reference to a 59 but I believe it probably was a 1960. It is hard to document but some guys sharper than I on the road cars say it was probably the #3 Lemans racer that he acquired and raced to an extent. Not sure how much success he had with the car but the 62 was pretty successful. Here is a picture of the 1960 and the 62 below. Like the wheels on the 62.

Jim, thanks for checking your notes. It is interesting that the 56-57 car looked somewhat similar and was at a track a few hours from where Don lived. It’s also worth noting that both of his Cotvettes had the stripe typically seen on road race cars but the 56-57 car didn’t . Either way it caught my eye and I like the vintage photos when I can find them. I agree with you on the wheels. They look like Magnesium American Five Spokes on the back and Magnesium Halibrand Sportmags on the front. They really give the car a good look.

Don Gist made his way to York, PA. for a points meet in "62". We were there and the coverage was in Hot Rod magazine with a picture of his "62". Can't remember what month Hot Rod?

Jason just so you know the 3/4 view of the rear and side of the 62 was taken when Don raced in Colorado. I only wish there was more press reports of his successes.

Some great pics above by 65 pacecar but Bob Lowry your 61 looks great and brings back good memories. I helped a buddy with a similar 61 lift the stance to right about what you have in 68/69. We used a 4" I-beam and I remember we had to fiddle with the steering to make sure the geometry worked well. Car was maroon with the white coves and had ET mags. I have made my cars have a bit of a stance but I went with a homemade 3": I-beam. Your car looked great IMO.

65 Pacecar, I am 99% sure the 53 with the Pontiac is from my neck of the woods. I ran into the owner and the friend who built the car about 10 years ago at the Corvettes America show when it was in White Lake Michigan. I took pictures of the car and have them somewhere. The owner I believe told me he was the original owner. I really liked the scoop on the car and will try and find a picture. With all of the return to stock with these old Vettes it is good to see some resisted the temptation and kept them as they were back in the day. There were a number in my neighborhood and not a one was kept totally stock. Guys liked to make a few changes to suit their tastes.

Here are the pics I took of the 53. I happen to like the mags and blackwalls as opposed to the hubcaps with whitewalls. Here is also a picture of my black car-with the sun all of the pictures are marginal. Funny thing about that show is the guy next to me had this really nice turquoise 59 and we both took second in class (he in stock and mine in modified). The show is a cleanliness show and so if you have some dust here or there you lose points. My car is a driver so I was happy with second and more than that I took a Celebrity Choice award by a group of GM engineers who attended the show. The guy with the 59 kind of went ballistic and called over the chief judge and wanted to know who took first in his class. As it turned out some guy brought his 62 Vette from California in a trailer and he wanted his car judged but not shown (I believe he was attending other shows out east). According to the judge, the guy backed out his 62 across the way and they judged it and put it back in the trailer. The 59 owner would not give up and wanted to know the rules according the rulebook etc. He then insisted that he be allowed to inspect the 62 and they refused which only made him madder. The sideshow went on for some time and it makes one shake their head as to the length some guys go. I later saw him at another show and he really deserved a trophy and he did not even get a third place trophy. I know the guys that put on that show and asked him about it and he rolled his eyes and walked away without answering but I figured the guys reputation may have got the better of him. He has since sold his 59 but he now has a C3 and I saw him recently and the memory always makes me chuckle.
