Projects Shop maintenance, getting organized. It's about time.

Me too, but in Nor Cali I just got to blow the leaves and cobwebs off it.

 

That's right now. It's outside the garage collecting leaves, oh and chipmonks in the legs... so removing the ram lets them have a home for the winter. Well not really, I'll be using it occasionally, but then they'll be inside warm for a little bit.

 

The Ram on my HF one went bad after about 15+ years of being outside. I just put a new Ram in it and put grease on the exposed part, sorta packed it around where the Ram goes into the cylinder. Zip tied a plastic bag down around the release and crank.
I figure this one may out live me

 

Clean As you Go Or it Will Get Way Ahead Of You...

 

Have a yearly shop party. Thats about the only time I get around to cleaning and reorganizing....

 

Using a garage for storing cars in and using one for working in are two sperate issues.

 

It should be mandatory that we are allowed a minimum of 2 2-car garages by SWMBO. And 3-bay would be better!

 

My shop looks like it got picked it up, turned up-side down, and got the daylights shook out of it. Then it got turned back right-side up and set it back on the ground...
Man one of these days, I'll start to get ready to commence to begin to think about eventually gettin' organized.
But then again... we don't want to rush into this shit!

 

... Yeah, I gotta tidy mine up soon.

Glad to see the Pontiac wasn't in there when... what ever happened... happened!!!

 

Well if you look carefully, there's a windshield hiding in there...

I just left it for a few days and it got all untidy like that!

(I guess we have a datum for "untidy" now).

Bummer man. I feel your pain. I just got a roof put on the house Saturday from a tornado.

 

That's what took my garage down.

However, look on the bright side- once it's put back up it'll be tidy!

 

And new... sorry to see such a tragedy!

 

Wow! I am glad you can keep a good attitude about that. Hope you have good homeowners insurance. Finally, I hope your house is okay...

On another note, I am doing a major garage clean out. Brand new heavy shelving, and getting rid of redundant power tools, hot rod parts I haven't used for years, and wood from various household projects I have been squirreling away for a decade or so. The plan is to turn one bay into a boy cave for my two kids. (11 and 14) we have a nice Foosball table and are going to set up our 1/32 scale slot car track on a 4×8 sheet of plywood.

 

That is why I now own 2 pickle forks... Sometimes it is easier to drive to town and buy another tool and a hamburger....

 

I have like 7 caulking guns for that very reason.

 

I had a tough time cleaning up my shop because every time I would pick up something to put away, I would think "hmm, where's a good place for this" and I would set it back down in the same place. I finally got some tubs and shelves and divided everything into tools, chemicals/paint/oils, supplies and parts. I then used the angle metal with the holes that are used for garage door supports and nailed strips one the wall to hang up my 300+ screwdrivers and I drilled holes in pieces of 1 x 4 to put #8 x 4" bolts to use to hang wrenches And then I put all my chrome or small parts on the walls of my lift shop to make it look like a hot rod museum. Eventually I had a place for everything and picking up the shop is a lot easier. When working on something and I need some tape or fuses or lug nuts.. I know I have a tub for each of those and if I don't have it in the tub, I just don't have it. I also set up boards to hang sockets, ratchets etc. And I have a big tub to put thing in when I'm too busy to put things away.

 

I "lost" a T5 tranny. Found it after a few weeks in the safe spot I stored it in.

 

Even the storage bins are stored neatly. This is a sign of a sick mind!

 

Simple cantilever shelf. I make them wide enough to fit a rubbermaid longways, Or 2 feet to rip OSB. Set the height so truck doors clear.
Build the outer 2x4 box, prop it up on ladders and wood blocks at the height you want. Lag bolt a 2x4. Level it. Lag the rest. Build your supports at 30 to 35 degrees to sit on wall studs. Line up your supports. Put in your cross braces to screw into sides of your supports, adjust which side of the support so you have 4 ft of 8 foot spacing. OSB topper. When I built these there was construction in my neighborhood and I grabbed heavy OSB drops out of their junk pile.

 

My Dad is building a 44x64 "lean to" on the side of my 44x30 shop right now
Should start sheeting tomorrow.

 

Ram on mine went bad from having a 409 hang from it all winter, F'n boat anchor, F me for letting anyone else use it.

 

Indy, that is the slickest lean-to I've ever seen. .
