I'm in the left camp. I didn't even notice them when you posted that first back side photo when it was all in primer. :)

I gotta agree they'd look best hidden, as others have said. Too late for that? Lol...

I vote left. It'd look cool too to fab up something to match the lp cover...

The Ranchero made a 40 mile round trip to lunch with car guys that do it every other Wednesday. Cruised nice. In a shop getting the exhaust finished up now.

Tying up all the loose ends on the Ranchero. Exhaust complete. Emergency brake all done. Gauge cluster all rebuilt and all working. New steering wheel on. A couple small things yet to do and then it’s time to tear down, sand and paint…

  11. Jake as I remember, you are a few years older than me. You have years of exp., a garage with enough tools and a vision that was accomplished. You have a very impressive build. It wouldn't make any difference who did it but the fact that you are old and soldier through is very impressive. Younger people have no idea what it's like to be old which is fine. There's plenty of older people who keep going. The one thing that will remain for as long as most of us will know is "that is Jake's truck". No matter who ends up with it, for those of us that watched, it will always by your truck. Kudos to you. You have my respect. :)

Wow. Thank you. Pretty humbling words. I’m just an old body man/upholsterer having fun. A person needs reason for getting up and enjoying every day. I’ve got to be busy and have a passion for building cars as well as a great wife, kids, grandkids, and a pretty new great grandson to keep me busy with other activities. I’ve been pretty lucky in my life.

This is the last really big car project, but I’ll have to find some smaller ones to keep me going…:)

  13. @jakesbackyard Are you going to put any connectors on the gauge cluster to make it easier to remove if ever needed? I used 6 pin wire connectors on my '51 Custom when I had the dash out and rewired it. Also made for an easy install and not having to contort an old body to work under the dash.

I thought about it and probably should have, but no. I didn’t. I’m skinny and thankfully pretty limber yet…:)

Really like the steering wheel. Never saw one with the top spokes down in that position. :)

  21. This has got to be, hands down, THE BEST Ranchero conversion out there.

    Pretty durn smart!!
With the spoke pointed down.....there's no need to twist & turn to be able to read the instrument panel.
    I like it!

  27. If any shoebox Ranchero conversion looks correct, yours is the one.

Really enjoyed keeping up with this build, gives me a lot of inspiration on how to do a few things on my avatar.

  29. I did mine on my '59, made the gauge lights all common and the gauge wiring with long leads. I have 2 barrier strips mounted to a plate back-to-back under the dash, easy to reach.

  30. To me it was a no brainer as to how simple and easy the reinstall was. The work behind the dash was accomplished on the bench sitting on a stool and not standing on your head with a flashlight in your mouth with both arms contorted. Adding those connectors enabled me to reinstall the dash in the car. Raise the car on the lift with the door open and simply push the connectors together and tuck them up out of the way.
