I am almost done stripping all this loose stuff off! Just a little more touchup on the inside. Then I got a fill about 5 million holes somebody drilled in the floorboards and firewall. Well I’m glad my dad primed and painted the underside years ago it saved it. It’s just that the car leaked so bad in the rain that the inside floorboard started to rust. that’s why there’s so many holes! my Pops drilled a bunch of drain holes LOL!!!! So in essence….he did save it from rusting out… but…now I’m gonna spend a lot of time filling! Man it’s a lot of work stripping a body by hand!!! I think I’m gonna cave-in, and have the doors and fenders soda blasted!!! I can put those in the back of my truck so that’s not a problem.
Not this one! To special. ‘Sides… I think 33-34 sedan‘s look to squashed when they’re chopped. Coupes are fine.
Your gettin' it done @33Doll...you've walked a mile in many shoes...I guess this is part of the paint jail walk...some of these walks are eye openers...I always say I have great respect for so many that brave these professions as they are challenging to say the least...
Got about have the holes done! Wasn’t too bad since I made plugs, snd use copper for backing on the small ones. Ran out of welding gas. Will hit it again next week. Getting closer to getting the body back on…. Christmas Vacation??
165+ holes welded up! 40 more on the firewall! Can’t believe how much stuff was screwed or bolted to the floor boards over the years! They were all small 3/16—-9/16-ish Firewall pretty much has just standard stock holes I’m just filling all of them because I’m not using them. And I’ll re-drill the heater holes where I decide to locate it
A floor in that good of shape needs to be sandblasted and a coat of epoxy put on it,you will never have to worry about it again.Same for the outside of the body,it is really hard to get the little bits of rust out of any pitting areas,i would go the extra mile and then it would not come back to haunt you.I have the same car,but it is not in near as nice shape as yours.im jealous of it. Good Luck
@37 caddy i completly disagree about sand blasting. It warps the metal and as one resto shop owner said "sand blasters are good at selling patch panels" Chemical treatment of rust is a lot less damaging.
It depends on how you do it. Use low pressure (50-60psi) and don't work on one area too long. You won't warp it and its a lot better surface prep than chemical stripping. That's my two cents. There is truth in sandblasting!
Holes are all done! Lost count after 197!!! Gonna start on the dings and bruises. Get the sanding and Filler out of the way! Then por 15 the patches, and neutralize the pores. And industrial paint the inside and underneath. Then under coat it. It will be a wash out floorboard like my Bronco was! This car is gonna be driven! No fluff here. The interior is going to be exposed wood and Top bows painted black, and black canvas instead of the white to hide the chicken wire. Original style vinyl top, Then I’m gonna make door panels and quarter panels panels out of that stuff that is textured and goes on industrial bathroom walls, and paint it black. Like Pecker Heads Roaster pickup. It’s gonna look like how people in old town districts expose all the brick and ducting and paint it all flat black or whatever instead of putting a false ceiling in. It’s gonna look cool trust me!!! I am an artist!
Cool! Good old Google search! Came up with different colored textured plastic panels awesome don’t have to paint it!!!!
I like the idea of a he hose out interior. I would make up some carpet floor mats that you can take out and pressure wash, just to help keep the noise down.
Meh' .. being a bartender for years .. I've been around that textured panel a bunch. It's very "tinny" in sound quality. While I myself wouldn't install it in a car .. I guess if one is inclined, you'd really need some sort of binding, stick on sound deadening stuck to its backside. If one were to do all that, I'd then question why one wouldn't just do a fiber panel, & upholstery, but altogether .. not my car. PeckerHead's ride is an RPU. Not the quietest of rides, as is. An apples to oranges comparison.
@33Doll your project is wicked cool and your approach is fantastic!! Even with a horrible 2020, including losing your Mother you have kept your nose to the grindstone. The finish line is in sight!! Would you do me a favor before you set the body on please? I am looking for the measurement between rear axle and rear spring on a 33-34 Ford. You have a 8inch rear and welded brackets. If you could measure center of axle to center of spring I would appreciate that. Thank you sir, Ron
Tried out some of that fiberglass based, Duraglas Bondo! Holy Mackerel that stuffs hard! If you don’t cheese grade it within 15 minutes, it just slides right across it! But after about an hour of sanding it, one pass did pretty good so I got a couple more to do and then I’m gonna skim coat it with 3M putty, I think it will be pretty easy! I freaking hate bodywork! But I am kind of good at it, I think.
Ah the infamous "Green monkey shit" I hate the stuff but it's good at sealing tiny pin holes and it's water proof. Tiny skim coats are your friend or you have to grind it off with 36 grit. Cars looking awesome!
Never let that stuff dry before you sand it,i always "File" it the second it is ready, then you shape it with a board and some 36 grit. The same for your fill, sand or file it as soon as it is ready, saves a lot of elbow grease and is very easy to shape too.It will clog the paper easy, just have a blow gun ready to keep blowing out the pores on the paper, and dont be scared to use fresh paper,it will cut better and save time in the long run. Also blow out the "pinholes" on any fill before you recoat it,it is unbelievable how many little craters you will see in the new filler. harvey
36 grit is your friend with that stuff, it meant more as a base than a top coat so you'll be putting a skim coat to cover anyways and the 36 grit scratches give the top coat something to bite in to. Look into Evercoat Polyester Glazing Putty for the skim coat, it's 2 part and sands like butter. 30 years with this product with zero issues.
You guys probably already know that I have pretty low patience!! But I absolutely hate bodywork!!! Give me metal all day long! But sanding and Filling, Freaking Sucks! Plus my rotator cuff’s shot anyway I’ve been spending two weeks on this dent on the back of the body and I roughed it out as best as I am willing to spend on it! I’m just gonna have the bodywork done later after the car is running and driving. I don’t wanna dick with it spending a year on a couple of dents!! It’s gonna be semi flat-Black for now anyway. Wanna Drive it before Newsom outlaws Gas Motors! Looks a hell of alot then before!
It a good thing you have low patience and hate bodywork so hopefully you won't be fixing dents and adding new ones......I have a fluctuating patience level that I really try to leave locked within as acting out many times comes back to haunt and you know tossing the wrench and it bounces back and deflects off your head eh!!! 33, you definitely have to give yourself a big pat on the back as you are doing stand up job here...you had me going...I was thinking you painted it Pooh Brown...but al-ass...it's only primer... You must admit walking a mile in other tradespeoples shoes can be eye opening...
Shiny paint is way overrated IMHO. I prefer “park it anywhere “ paint jobs. Great Hot Rod you’re building.
I love that you've just kept working right along, taking on whatever comes next (or going down the rabbit hole).
Well I got some way easier to use Bondo! That fiberglass stuff was killing me although it’s strong as hell!!! Probably use it on the thin areas of metal underneath or something or on the rockers. But for regular bodywork….hell no!! We’ll see how this ever coat sands it’s supposed to be easy sand! Merry Christmas folks!!! By the way!!
