This is a very cool set of adventures, that a dad and his son are enjoying, that is a rare event in these days of the internet, and sad to say, a lot of kids could give a shit less about old cars !

This thread really puts a smile on my face, and the fact that your son choose to purchase this very cool Edsel 4 door, is strong convincing evidence, that he digs it, and he grasps the element of that its cool, and its not what everybody else is driving to cool events.

I hope he keeps it for ever !
Bravo for the road trip and the pictures.
    Thanks for posting !

Jeff, the Aerostar mini van springs worked great up front on my 58 Edsel. Also put in a 67 Mustang dual reservoir master cylinder. It was a bolt in swap besides the brake line work. Super cool car. Glad to see him driving it and looks like he is proud of having his own unique car.

Definitely, everybody is a little ornery when first woken up.

I agree with this, alternators replaced generators for some very good reasons, a big part of that is no maintenance. Most people do not want to learn the old school lore of old school charging systems, at least not after the fact by the side of the road. If the generator and voltage regulator are not serviced and maintained at certain intervals, it will fail. They aren't difficult to master but there is a learning curve. Expecting "as found" generators and voltage regulators to work as advertised probably ain't the way to bet.

Also want to "get smart" on valve lash adjustment, it's pretty important with solid lifter engines. At the same time you're doing that it is an opportunity to see overall how well the rocker arms are getting oiled, and check for chewed or bent pushrods.

  6. All good points for sure and I definitely appreciate the reminders. We haven't really had much opportunity to even look everything over good on the car as far as normal maintenance stuff. It will be good for him to learn how to adjust valves since he also thinks he wants a drag car at some point soon and will probably need to know for that one too.

When we got it all back together, we found a small pinhole in the soldered joint on the radiator that we will try to get fixed today. Planning to drive it to Bartlesville early tomorrow if we can get a few things sorted out today. If it weren't for a job to pay the bills, I could have much more time to do this stuff. :D

This week has been nuts as we are also trying to get my younger son's OT car running for the first time since he got it about a month ago. Having two boys within 6 months of each other causes some competition at times especially when it comes to their "new" toys. At least the OT car is just a traditional sbc with a hydraulic cam and a little more modern (from the 70's) charging system, etc. It just came minus motor so we seem to spend WAY too much time just chasing bolts, etc. that could have easily been saved by the previous owner that pulled the engine. Oh well, we almost finished it up last night. Maybe tonight...

If you are interested in a one wire type alternator for your son's Edsel- they make a 1 wire ford type alternator, I put one on my 300 6 and it couldn't be easier, works great. Wasn't expensive either (seems like about 80 bucks). I can find out who makes it if you're interested.

Let me guess, almost 30 years later she doesn't hesitate to remind everyone of this! Good girl. :)

Get him a Ford Edsel Shop Manual for his birthday or maybe your birthday. Preferably a paper reprint copy. They are probably 50 bucks or so. Worth every penny.

It will have everything in it he might want or need to know on maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, fluid types and quantities, torque specs, etc.

When it comes to finding parts, the correct Ford part # is almost like magic when typed into a database or intenet. eBay is a pretty good place to get parts, sometimes they are otherwise hard to source or expensive for what you're getting.

Sent you a Pm back Jeff, Alternator is a TFF -7068, got it from Summit $89.97. I sent you copies of reciept and a pic of it mounted on engine. It is basically the front of a Ford alternator with the guts and rear of a 1 wire GM. Here's the pic on the engine- that was before it was a runner IMG_2036.JPG

  14. Nothing like the last minute before we leave at 6:00 in the morning to adjust the stance a little. We just put 2” blocks in the rear so far.

  17. The bumpers, grille, tailights and all the chrome moldings have to be worth a couple grand by themselves, don't they?

  23. Made it to the hotel to cool off a bit after basically driving all day. About 350 very nice cars here for the event. And then, there is us. :D

  29. Well, I figure there will be lots of coverage of the Gathering at the Roc on other threads, so won’t post much here. It was a fun weekend and Silas played photographer trying to capture pics of several of the cars. I will at least try to post a link to his pics once we get them off the camera. This pic is stolen from @winduptoy that he took while stopping along the road where Silas was catching cars going to Woolaroc.
