Didn’t need it at all but the old buddy I bought the roadster pickup off of has been having some health issues.. with that he came to the conclusion that he is not going to get to some things.

i stopped by their afternoon coffee Spot a few weeks ago while test driving the 32 I had just got done rebuilding the motor for..

during that time a guy asked him “so your going to sell your 34” he quickly replied yes..

he had priced it to him before but way high and he told me it was cause he didn’t want to sell it..

we walked out side to look at the motor before he left I asked are you seriously selling your 34.. he said “yep I’ll never get it done, why you interested?” When I said I was he just said well we’ll talk and I won’t tell anyone else about it..

went to look at it since I forgot what it really looked like.. after a short conversation we agreed on a price.. Had to sell some things to come up with the rest of the money so the quickest thing I knew that would sell would be the signs I had collected over the last 10 years or so..

    AF5D1F44-5957-4614-844C-001D08D50E68.jpeg

So called a few guys I’ve dealt signs with over the years and raised the money plus a little..

couple days after that we got together and I brought it home

Story with it is the old buddy that got me into old cars and built the 32 I have now had painted it for him and assembled it. Turned out the motor that he had for it was bad and he took it home and parked it for probably 15-20 years.

year or so ago he had another buddy out a rebuilt motor in it.. took it home and parked it again..

going to get the motor running first and start in the brake system and probably make a few changes.. I have no idea what the master cylinder is or what the shoes look like.

pulled the intake and heads to check the valves and clean the heads up.. he was honest in saying it never had ran.. the motor was stuck very lightly so I mixed up some ATF and acetone.. after a little bit it came loose..

    16A756AC-A19F-4084-A5B5-66C906015E94.jpeg

Will wipe the cylinders with oil and get the valves done..

then I’ll figure out a carb and new ignition system for it..

Wanted a closed cab pickup for awhile and I couldn’t think of a better one to have then one my friends had and put together

Sweet on your part, sorry about your buddy's health. Kind of a sweet and sorrowful tale. Best thing for you to do is finish it and take him for a ride.
Is that a 4 barrel intake on the 8BA?

A great truck and some neat history with a friend of yours makes it all the better. Bummer about having to sell off those signs but I've been in that spot myself and I'd rather have the truck, can always find some different stuff to hang on the walls.

  5. Great - hopefully you'll be able to get it done and take him to coffee in it !

That's a neat looking pickup. Sounds like he was happy for it to go to you than anyone else. Now get that 8BA sorted and put some miles on it.

Thanks! Yes it is a 4 barrel intake. I believe it’s one I actually traded him for the 3x2 intake I used on my roadster pickup.. which has found to be a little difficult finding a square pattern carb

Thanks been working on it and as usual it is taking a little more work then I had thought it would to get it going

That’s the plan and why I stopped working on other things.. I really want to get it going to take him for a ride before winter

I get it sorted out I’ll cruise up that would make for a nice test drive! Haven’t seen you in awhile anyway... still have your pickup?

I figure I’ll use this thread to update the progress of getting the truck back going again..

Been chipping away at it since I picked it up.. so far I’ve be able to

remove gas tank, clean it out, install new sender, make new hold downs for it(couldn’t remove bolts with the bed on), run new wires for sender

run new fuel line, install electric fuel pump, run power wire for new pump

blast and paint the headers, heads, and I take

repair, replace, and rewire some of the wiring

Install new distributor, coil, plug wires, wire holders, new wiring for ignition system

Change our old unknown brake master for early ford, rework mount for that to locate it in correct place(old one the rod from pedal was at way to much of a side angle, new hose and bracket to feed the rear lines, new line to feed from brakes..

Pulled the from hubs to inspect brakes and replace leaking drivers side wheel cylinder.. going to replace all wheel cylinders and hoses..

tracked down two square bore wcfb carbs which the kit should be here tomorrow..

still a lot of little things left.. need to figure out a fan since the 8ba fan sticks out just a bit far and hits the radiator..

here are some pics of what’s been going on.. I have no idea why this site likes to flip pictures around when they show up just fine on my phone and when they are uploaded.. then post all different directions..

been a little slow since I was down for about 10 days with covid.. still worked on the truck when was down but not to fast...

off topic but also in that time while I was down I lost a cat that I inherited when an ex gf left.. car was about 17 and had been diabetic for about 3.5 years.. I Had the cat for about 5 Years.. needless to say I didn’t get much of anything done that day..

I am saddened to hear about your kitty. I have mostly been a cat guy, as far as pets go. But I let a dog into my heart, and it is almost a year since I lost him. I miss my Nitro nearly like as if I lost one of my boys.

Few more updates.. worked on the intake and generator/alternator setup.. had to clearance the front part of the intake so the mount would slide down..

    while doing the rear brakes kind of cool to see the old stampings in the key ways 1E067EE1-D7C4-4B4E-8DCE-D2365FFA8B18.jpeg CC64858E-1E53-447C-BF93-92B5570CB5E5.jpeg 6AF03002-8492-4581-B4E3-18AA836FBC8F.jpeg ECE2475C-8AE2-461E-9EB6-88F14D97AA90.jpeg A5568127-D47A-430E-8C55-147587691EEB.jpeg DD6AFFF4-8A59-4D4E-AAA8-B6EE1EEFF81B.jpeg 021C0931-C9B2-4C97-B20F-BD8227499F64.jpeg 37A20F3D-6142-4659-9AE6-746F4D6EF029.jpeg 6ADFEE24-9450-48F6-BE40-78A74ADEC89E.jpeg 668BACE1-E57A-4894-B41D-F2F46C471C78.jpeg 5BB98FB6-15B7-4744-B381-D8FE25F097AD.jpeg AC95BA08-81E9-4733-8C34-F3D52DF8948C.jpeg 85914BD0-A0C5-4949-AF87-A0606C9BF515.jpeg

ended up buying a new Holley 390.. had two wcfb carbs but they were missing linkages and with so many different variations of the wcfb I couldn’t find the linkages for them... due to wanting to get it going broke down and bought the new one..
    309C8E17-AB6C-46F1-9414-DAC909378CEA.jpeg

Had to remove the one plug to put the pcv valve in its place. Didn’t take the time to think about how the motor actually vented the crankcase.. so moved the pcv idea from the where the fuel pump was up to where the road draft tube/plug was E3297839-FE83-498B-9CE9-CC4A4F2A686A.jpeg

I believe if I remember right this truck had an earlier (59a) motor when I first looked at it years ago and it sat down lower in the frame.. which would make sense of why a lot of the stuff doesn’t seem to be in the right place or line up with the 8ba in it now

  22. Thanks for asking about her. She is doing very well, had the drains taken out and a week later the stitches.;) Her fur is growing back and she is back out and about.:) She went with me today to the recyclers to get rid of some old tires. She loves to ride in the truck and sits in the back seat and watches the scenery. Nice work milling the intake. Will it help with throttle response?

Really great engineering, and your passion with strength of mind to continue this task during your issues and losses must be rewarding. I was in the middle of a model A build during the loss of an 18 year old mutt that I loved me more than like itself. A year later my wife and car companion of 32 years died of an accidental drug overdose. If not for family and great friend support I may have moved the coupe to someone else, but the car hobby is great therapy and car builders usually seem to get it done, and you will be trucking down the road soon. Nice images of your truck build, and thanks for being an animal lover.

That’s great news that’s she’s back at it! Surprisingly this old cat used to love car rides when she was younger according to the ex.. but I think her arthritis changed that.. I’m not really sure what it’s going to do honestly.. a guy on a forum said they picked up 12hp on their race motor doing it so figured I’d give it a try.. only bad thing is I don’t really have A before and after to compare it to..

oh wow! So sorry to hear about that! That would have been an extremely difficult time.. glad that you have some good people around you and that you also kept the car. I work with the public for the most part I like animals more then people haha!

Unfortunately the stock fan was just not gong to work.. I was running it through my head a million ways to make a fan mount to get a mechanical fan in there... but since I’m limited on time I went the electric route..

Found out recently that metal prices are through the roof so used what I had laying around.. will strip it and paint it anyway..

not sure if this is a sign I need to start eating better but while laying in the floor board doing some wiring it decided to let go.. I think I’ll just blame it on the wood being old and dry..

Also it appears that when I chose to resize the images it’s flipping some.. so maybe from here on out I will just not resize them so the won’t be all different directions.

hope to get the fan wiring finished today and get the gauges changed.. the bus hubs for the capillary tubes should be here tomorrow..

  26. @twenty8tudor Three questions. Did that sign have the 3M reflective material on it? How did you strip it and get it that clean? Lastly with sign material being not just Aluminum but an alloy. How did you get those 90 Degree bends without it snapping off? Very nice work but I have never got them stripped or bent that good.

I figured they had to be more then just aluminum how tuff they were lol.

Not sure what brand but this one wasn’t reflective.. my brother used to work for the county highway department and they went through and replaced all the non reflective signs.. that’s where this one come from..

the two on the passenger side did crack right on the corner of the bends. I drilled the corners and left the radius when I cut up to it on the band saw.. maybe that helped.. But all I did to bend them was clamp then and bend the up with the hammer.

    6FE7E4DF-2DB2-43DA-8ABC-1086F8B220AE.jpeg CF55DA1C-2550-41F8-B585-186C6374088B.jpeg

I plan to take my tig and either do a fusion pass or run a bead on the bends just to make sure that isn’t cracked inside and it won’t snap after vibrating for a while.

must not stripped yet, the vinyl part is facing the radiator. It was just a single sided sign. If it gives me to much trouble I might not strip is since it can’t be seen anyway. Hope that answers what you were wondering.

  28. That explains the stripping and those cracks most likely will not migrate but your outlook with either running a fusion pass or a bead will help. Thanks for the reply.
