That is a point that all too many guys especially the younger ones miss all together. When the narrow white walls showed up in the early 60's fresh customs were quick to have the "new width" latest white wall. You were the local high roller if you had Royal Masters. Walk through a show in the early 60's and see a set of Royal Masters on a custom and you knew it was a high dollar car. To me the width of the Whitewall on a a car one of us builds now should match the time frame the car is supposed to be set in when you build it. A car that is built to be as it would have been if it was fresh in 1962 wouldn't be the same as one that represents a 1949 Build time frame. Story on myself, Late in 1968 I had my dad order a new 69 Cutlass S for me and I specified black wall tires and small hubcaps. The salesman had a fit that I wanted to order a car with black walls and without the chrome wheel well trim . I love white walls but not on everything.

On the Hudson and Roadster wide whites are a must for the style. On the Riviera narrow bands suit it better. didn't have time to clean them that morning!!
can't believe that all these are that hard to keep clean,...been drivin mine for about 5 years and have only scrub'd em a few times...
Agreed, I like the driven look...its a balance with the rest of the Hotrod...But most have been okay in this Thread and the polls are reflective of that...Tell you what...I'm going to clean the Ole Hotrod and wipe the Walls while I'm at it that would be Twice this year...my arms twitching as we speak... I just put wide whites on my shit. Thin white is more period correct, but I like the WW look. For some reason the pictures make the stance look different -it's not.
...Its the hood open...that'll do it every time...... The angle is slightly different too...I would tend to think both old and new trends were done as I don't think it ever went out of style for those who preferred the older widths and truly OEM trends influenced, but since when is following the OEM direction a Hotrod/Custom thing...again I was 1 year old so I'm making assumptions but there were those that did and those that didn't and around here many that didn't are now praised for restraint and not venturing down the trendy later 60s and on...
Pick your width and build your adventure around it...that's the Art of the Look...Each year as they evolved it just made the options more plentiful...
Having a ride I feel by the sum of all parts to be the early 60s...and WWs are part of that inspiration...
Awesome eye poppers. Of course not the choice for all rides, but I love gangster whites and have had them through out most my car builds. Even my Harley.
