Okay, so I sprayed two coats of sound deadener today.

The first coat had some areas that shrunk and are cracked. Some of it covered with the second coat.

It was about 65 here a little sun and a breeze. After I sprayed it I rolled it back into my shop which is 70.

It was placed over 2 coats of epoxy, that was sprayed yesterday.

I kept a mil gauge with me the entire time. Neither coat had any thickness over 28 mils and most of the time it read 16-22.

    Any ideas? Is it okay?

  2. Looks to me like your 2nd coat cured before your first was dry. But as a sound deadening, i wouldn't worry about it.

What about giving it one more coat presuming everything is dried/cured completely?

No, but I've been known to have "plumbers crack" now and then!
Sorry, I'm no help, maybe @Bandit Billy can help.

The cracking was in the first coat before the second was applied.

It's gotten worse since the second coat has now dried....

  9. My guess you didn't let your epoxy cure for long enough and it is reacting with the lizard skin. You should wait a minimum of 24hrs before putting anything over epoxy unless the epoxy specifically states otherwise and if it was sprayed on metal that was cool even longer.

Yup, epoxy was not cured so now it is causing the cracks. Wait until it has cured an do one more coat of lizard skin

    It was 24 hours...

The epoxy manufacturer says it was good to go after 45 minute's...

You guys are exactly correct.... peeled up some at a crack and the epoxy is still kind of gooey in those areas.

Think it'll be fine or do I need to scrape it off?

It makes sense, because everywhere it is cracking is where I couldn't get a nice even coat on because you cant get the gun in there.....under dash, cab corners, cowls etc.

Those were the areas you just have to point and shoot...

  15. "Good to go in 45 mins" and "I left if for 24 hrs" sounds odd. Is there a full can/container of catalyst still on your bench :)

Both brand new...I need to check dates on them. I guess it's possible that they sit on a shelf before they were shipped.

I'm really thinking I just laid it down to thick...I just hope it will cure after it was sealed with the Lizardskin.

Im glad I learned it now before I did the floor, and raptor liner.

We used both Lizard Skin products on the floors, firewall, etc. of the Comet on both the underside and interior side, it was applied over ecoating and did not crack or split anywhere.
As some others have mentioned give it some time and shoot another thin coat over the cracks.

    It's growing....

I peeled a piece of and there is a thin layer of soft gooey stuff. I think it is the top layer of epoxy.

Give it a couple more days and then spray over it with black bed liner spray.
    Won't anybody know but-chew!

  26. Here’s what happens. Epoxy cures really slow. You said you waited 24hrs and that’s usually enough.
If the epoxy isn’t cured, applying some products over it will trap the solvents trying to evaporate. These solvents then attack the epoxy. Causes it to get gooey.
If it was a topcoat, you would have to remove the epoxy. But inside like that I’d wait it out and see how it does.

Why is it shrinking back like that?

  28. If the solvents attack the epoxy and soften it the hardened topcoat will crack as it cures
the topcoats surface tension draws or moves around on the softened undercoat

It’s also a way to create a fake patina. Spray something that dries fast over something that dries slow.
I have had this happen when spraying polyester primer over epoxy too soon. It cracks along the body lines first. You can dig into it and the epoxy is soft.

Talked to the epoxy manufacturer and he said the same thing.

Advised me to go ahead and touch up the cracks today. So far so good. Im going to spray two coats of ceramic as well. They should be completely sealed and hidden.

He also said it would cure under water....it just takes longer and not to worry about it.
