Good morning, everyone! I wanted to share a drawing I made this week for a client of his father's 1955 Bel Air 4 door. They bought it new in the '50s, and while the family doesn't have the car anymore, it still sparks a lot of fond memories riding around in the top of the line trim package. Plus, it's fun to draw something different - I mean, how many 4 door drawings do you see...?

    Hello,

In June 1955, I was eleven and my brother was 13, going on 30. He was just starting his interests in drag racing. It was rumored that a new dragstrip was going to be finished just a mile or so away from our Westside of Long Beach house. That was going to be cool.

But, after it opened in October, we were looking at old Drag News papers and reading all about the top racers in So Cal. One of the cool modified roadsters was the Berardini Brothers scalloped/ flamed roadster that was in magazines and newspapers at the time.

After the Berardini Brothers sold the 404 roadster in 1955, it still set new records in dragstrips all along the California scene. The new owner kept racing until 1968 when most little guys were forced out by the big corporate sponsorships and the “not fair” competition models.
upload_2021-9-24_3-46-11.png $975 in 1955 dollars equals $9,476.20 in 2021. That estimation does not mean it is only worth almost $10k. It is has too much history to not be more valuable.

Growing up in early hot rods and boring school classes, I honed or at least tried to hone my scallop drawing abilities on my school papers and notebooks. Luckily, I had time to do that between the lectures on whatever classes that I was in at the time. Don’t get me wrong, I loved school and all that it offered. But, I was distracted by two main things, girls and sports. The third thing was hot rods as presented by my brother in magazines, his ideas, and our model car building times.

So, as my scallops went from straight to wavy, they began to get more “flamey” if there is such a word. Then as that progressed, the flames took on a claw look and then it was open season on how the flames would present itself on paper or my Pee Chee notebooks.

The Berardini Brothers early roadster scallops were the cross between wiggly scallops and early flames. So, it was a starting point to fancier styles. Now, only if I could have improved to the point of doing it on bicycles, wagons and eventually on cars. My experiences were a disaster on actual cars, so that was drifting into the background, until another college lecture gave me time to mess around again with flames of all kinds... YRMV

Moose, that Corvair is anything but off the wall. Beautifully conceptualized and created.

Very kool images. I spend many hours cruising Chicago streets photographing
Latino (or is it now LatinX) images along with other murals and street art. I'm
often amazed at what I see. They're right at home on this car.
