Grew up in Detroit and the story we always heard was the lions in the crest were a connection to the Detroit Lions football team that the Ford family purchased in th 50's.

Personally, I think that Henry was insulted that American kids were stealing VW badges all across the country and not Ford badges so he tried to make them more attractive. I don’t think it worked.

 

The crest was on Ford’s long before the earliest v-dubs could be found by any numbers..I don’t buy into that thinking. When I sold a 60 dub in the 70’s the kid who bought it was surprised it still had the Wolfsburg badge on the front which was meaningless to me.
