Technical Cant access spark plug help

Ok guys I need some ideas or some help here. I have a 56 f100 the the y block 272 with the ram horn headers from mummert. I am trying to change the spark plugs but I am having a very hard time! There is not much clearance for the socket between the header and plug. So I am unable to remove them. Is my only option to remove the headers then remove the plugs? Or does anyone have any ideas or ran into this problem. Thank you.

 

Not sure but we have the original rams horns on a couple of cars , one fenderless hiboy 28 A and a 49 shoe box coupe, which is clearly more of a reach, and with the originals its not a straight shot but definitely doable . Can you use a thin walled socket??

 

I have tried just about every socket I could find even thin and it's still just shy of being able to clear. I'm guessing I'll have to remove the ram horns to access them

 

Cant see my sons rams horns as they are away being coated , will try to take a picture of our 49 coupe tomorrow in daylight.

 

If you end up taking them off, clearance them with a die grinder before you reinstall them.

 

I know this doesn’t really help , but these are original Y block rams horns , #1 #2 no real issues . It would seem Mummerts are different casting . Perhaps contact John Mummert. Would a 1/4” socket work rather than 3/8?

 

Get a cheap spark plug socket and grind the o.d. with a grinding wheel to gain clearance....

Make sure you have safety glasses on your mug.....

 

Make a tool that fits. Perhaps shorten the socket, and grab the hex head on it with a suitable tool?

My old SnapOn swivel spark plug socket is pretty short and reaches in most hard to get to spots pretty well.
Otherwise it is probably make one to fit the application.
It seems that we all have one of those old small engine spark plug sockets in the junk drawer until we need to use it but you can still find them easily enough if you don't have one and it would be simple to cut to fit and then either use a wrench on it or weld something to it for a handle for a special tool
