No it is not about engine theory. Not that kind of an discussion.

The wife found this engine reasonable at an estate sale. The people do not know what it is other than grandpa was a hot rodder and this was in his stash.

I truly do not recognize the engine. It looks familiar but I cannot definitively put my finger on it. Mrs 'Beaner cannot either. This is a rare occasion.

I think it is a 350 olds (which I am sure is absolutely wrong) she says its a Pontiac (of undetermined displacement)

So lets see what you think (or know). Fun, fun, fun.

 

I would guess Pontiac, maybe 316 or 347?

 

326 Pontiac, or at least that family. Just looked at one for sale here

 

The distributer cap and flat rocker covers are what is throwing me off I think. Granted the cap is an Echlin and not stock so the cap should not be an issue.

Plugs above the manifolds sure say poncho though don't they. That is what the Missus said.

These are probably correct answers though.

 

The 532311 exhaust manifold is 59 - 60 Pontiac.

 

Good eye. Never thought to look at the numbers on the manifiold.

59 389? It appears it is supposed to have the hoses for reverse flow. It appears they had been there.

 

1959 Pontiac, since 55-59 had reverse cooling, therefore two short hoses from water pump to each cylinder head. This does not have the hoses, but were supposed to. I would then look at the bell pattern and find out that it looks like the 55-60 pattern. Therefore 1959. 1961 was first year for BOP look alike and this is not a BOP pattern. Last thing to look at is if there are block mount starter tapped holes. If so 1964 or newer.
I say 1959!!!!!

 

Not a 326, those heads and water pump housing say ‘59 and earlier. The arrow in the first picture shows the holes drilled to intersect with the intake valve guides and the second picture shows what I believe is a stainless water distribution tube in the hole.
I have no idea what the holes were supposed to do for the guides. The heads had elbows bolted on that used short hoses to connect to the water pump housing.
I think it was 1960 when both the holes for the guides and water distribution tubes were eliminated.

I type too slow, @wvenfield and @d2_willys put a hole shot on me.

GMC used a Pontiac motor in their pickups in the mid to late '50s.... Could it be???...

@BuckeyeBuicks is correct, the 523298 head casting is for the ‘57 347 engine.
