    327 stamp.jpg This is supposedly a 327 from a Corvette or Camaro. Any ideas on more info? The stamp seems to be

  2. What is the casting number on the back of the block, drivers side?

  5. Suffix code list only shows F as either a 1955 265, or a 1957 283.

    Suffix means it's at the end of the string...prefix is at the beginning of the string. The F prefix means the engine was assembled in Flint, MI. The suffix seems to not be there. Normally it will have the plant prefix, then the date which would be 4 digits starting in the late 50s 3 or 4 before then. Then the suffix, which is one to three letters.

    The casting number and casting date, from the back of the block, will give you an idea what this engine is. If it had a suffix stamp, you'd know more about it.

    Also, what appears to be the letter I is really the number 1. That's how their number stamps looked at that time.

  7. looks like there are some more numbers/letters not revealed

    Sanding the pad down to bare metal might reveal more...only one way to find out

    Like other's have said, casting number and date will help narrow it down, especially if the suffix isn't completely stamped. The casting number will at least, usually, give an indication of CID. Without the suffix, it's almost impossible to pinpoint the application. Not that it matter's... all orange small blocks are 327's out of a Vette! LOL! :D

    The six digit number might mean that it's from a Vette...they stamped the partial VIN on corvette engines pretty early....

    Very true. Early on, the Vette's were the only ones with the last 6 of the VIN stamped in the block, or so I've been told. To further reinforce this theory, I have a 327/300 out of a 65 Impala with no partial VIN stamped in the block, but have also seen the same year Vette WITH the partial VIN stamped in the block. It is possible the OP's engine is from a Vette.

    I have a 66 396 from a passenger car, it has the 9 character partial VIN stamped on it. That's the earliest one I've seen

  13. Ever did the knuckle thing ? Maybe a picture would explain it - have a 327 double hump out back on the tennis court - I'll try and get a picture tomorrow.

    In both those examples the block would lack side engine mount bosses [and won't be a 4" bore]

  15. From what I have been told from a few Chevy restoration groups. 65 was the first year they started stamping partial vins, but it was mainly on higher HP or special engines. By 68 most V8's were stamped with the partial vin, then 69 they would then stamp partial vin around the oil filter are. I know some 210hp 327s lacked the vin on some 68 engines. 275hp's would have the partial vin.

    I've heard from a few places that they did Vettes earlier than the other cars, though

    I’m having trouble figuring it out. What’s the S mean? What’s the number under it mean? VIN? Correct me if I’m wrong on this.
    Numbers I have
    V1127FJS
    V= Flint
    11=November
    27= 27th day
    FJ=1969 327 CID 210 hp
    S= ?? Saginaw? That for the transmission?
