Hot Rods Look what followed me home today

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by racer-x, Jan 17, 2021.

  1. I have memories of those good times and they are coming back to be relived a second time.
I had the bolts come loose on my bars way back when. It made a terrible noise hitting the floor each time the gas was touched. Thats why im upgraded the frame and bolts. I would have welded the brackets to the frame but they are big and get in the way sometimes. Its nice to be able to get them off. When i was 17 i didnt know about lock tight or nylock nuts.

When I was 17 there was no loc-tite or Nylocks. Castleated nuts and cotter pins. :D

  3. My post about the cal-tracs was regarding the slammed S-10, not your car. Love the way you're going with yours!

  5. Exactly my memory of that Chevelle, It was driven daily back in the day. He probably had not checked the bolts, Hey we were kids having fun, street racing and chasing girls. :) Good times with cars, oh, and girls:D.

  6. Funny you should say girls and cars. I was driving my chevelle behind the high school on my way to work. I was a senior with enough credits to only have school until 11:30. A group of five girls jumped into my car. I gave them a ride to a local restraunt they wanted to go to. That was on a friday. I thought i would try my luck out the next monday. Sure enough they hopped in. I ended up getting married to one of them. I still have the girl and the car. Pic for fun. Obviously ot delete if necessary. 20201113_153434.jpg

I thought the hot ticket was to raze the rear of the upper control arms to help with the bad instant center.

  10. The umi bars come with brackets the allow for dropping the lower rear of the bar only. The adjustable uppers are for setting pinion angle.

  11. Goodies from the ELkhorn swap meet going on day one. The crossram is finally in my hands. The original factory engine lift brackets 69-70 only were found. A correct factory 69 timing cover 8 inch; with dowel holes; welded timing tab; angle cut was found in good shape. I had the entire replacement floor going back to the trunk delivered along with the inner and outer wheelhouses. The free shipping saved me 1400.00. Going back today for more. This engine will be crazy correct minus the intake and valve covers. 20210730_111832.jpg 20210731_070848.jpg 20210731_070855.jpg 20210731_070918.jpg

  12. Swap meet day two finds. It was a very good day. Stainless comp cams roller rockers like new 80.00. The vette fan assembly is date coded unit from 69. The clutch unit is original as the fins are straight. The repros have a curve in them. The date is stamped on the drive hub. The oil pan is a bbc chevelle pan. The seat belts were a awesome find with the narrow shoulder Y-strap. It will look perfect hanging from the old lakewood roll bar. Definetly from the late 60s- early 70s. For 10.00 i couldnt get the money out fast enough. A new repro 66 grill never installed 100 bucks. New they are 250.00 new. Push rod guide plates new 10.00 along with chrome pan bolts 10 bucks. The fram filter is what everyone had hanging down below the rear bumper back then. These are getting hard to find new with a good sticker. In the box with brackets 25 bucks. I collect mopar parts boxes and came home with three. A reprint 57 vette assemble manual 20 dollars. A few old magazines that are great for studying old ads. Then there is the spot welder. This runs on 220. It has two handles so two spot welds can be done at the same time. Its out of a old body shop. They dont repair cars the way they used to so it was collecting dust. In working condition 80 dollars. With the upcoming floor and rear quarter panel project how cool is this item coming along at just the right time? This is no harbor freight unit. Most of the parts i bought i had on my list. It was a long hot day but so worth it. This whole day two project got a huge boost over the last two days. It sure beats getting skunked like so many times over the years. 20210731_120954.jpg 20210731_154044.jpg 20210731_154051.jpg 20210731_154126.jpg 20210731_154145.jpg 20210731_154153.jpg 20210731_154232.jpg 20210731_154332.jpg 20210731_154942.jpg 20210731_154955.jpg 20210731_155853.jpg

If that Lenco spot welder is in working condition you will really like it. I have a slightly newer model but for all practical purposes it is the same. I have used it quite a few times with a little practice it will leave perfect factory looking welds.

  15. Great. Maybe if you have some time you could drive the Comet over and show me how to use it. I wont be starting on the floor project until September.

That timing cover does have the 2 dowel holes... One on each side, second holes up from the bottom...

  18. Your correct. I should have said its not the early no dowel hole cover that has a bolt in the bottom from the oil pan. I try to go through the extra effort to show the little details so others can score cool parts. The amount of guys out there that know the finer details from this era is getting smaller by the day. This knowledge i feel needs to be shared. It becomes a very small world when it gets down to these small details. Its so much easier for a guy to call jegs or summit. The craft we have spent so much time on perfecting is changing for so many reasons. A cell phone to quickly look up part numbers is one of them. It makes building a network of friends to share knowledge not as important as it used to be.

Brian, nice scores at the swap meet. I have that same spot welder. A guy gave it to me about 25 years ago, he said it didn't work, but maybe I could fix it. It sat under my workbench for about 5 years before I finally decided to play with it. When I tried it, I was surprised, it worked perfectly! You are going to love it.

  23. To me the old racing harness was the coolest find. The old lakewood rollbar would look naked without it.

  24. I couldnt resist i just had to mock it up. Ok guys honest opinion on the air cleaner stickers. The factory triangle air cleaner had it. Chevy had a sticker on everything back then calling out the engine size and hp. Im trying to play off that. It might draw guys in to look further to see if its a real 427 20210801_144004.jpg 20210801_144024.jpg

I'm not opposed to the sticker's, I think it would look good without them too. Would you have taken the time and effort to put them on, back in the day? Personally, I probably wouldn't have. ;) Save the sticker's for the quater window's. LOL! :D

I may be alone on this but it's not necessarily the decals as much as it's the air cleaners that I cant warm up to, I don't have an alternative and I'm sure you have your reasons to use them but they kind of say Pep Boys Chinese air cleaners to me, just being honest.

    Your not alone,
Brian, honestly you should look for something more period correct. I am using Stellings & Hellings units on the Cyclone, they were original equipment on the 427 Cobras that had dual Holley’s, they were also available aftermarket so they would be a good match on your set up.

  30. 20210801_180307.jpg I have a set of covers that are exactly like the magazine cover. Those would no dought be period correct. I tried to put the stickers on those. Do to the contours the stickers cracked. I bought new stickers and covers at the swap meet saturday thinking they would look better. I asked for input because im not to sure i like the look. Too Auto Zone for me. Maybe the plain covers would be better. 20210801_175458.jpg 20210801_175533.jpg
