Hello, Great coverage of one of the nicest areas all along the California coast line. Luckily, the weather looked great. When it is clear, the views are endless. The coastal cliffs and blue water just make the whole drive enjoyable. Back in 1967, my wife and I were on that road in some awful weather that blew so hard it was hard to see. Our goal was the Sea Ranch Community from Bodega Bay. We experienced weather so bad that we had to turn around at the ½ way mark, near Fort Ross. As fast as the wipers moved, the front window was instantly wet with more heavy raindrops. We almost had a swimming pool in the back, sloshing around. We visited other areas in the S.F. Bay Area for some photo shoots and in a few days, the weather was very clear after the storm. The drive was wonderful to the Sea Ranch area and after exploring that area, we continued until Eureka/Arcata farther up North along the coast. (We went to check out the huge waves and fearless Coast Guard daredevils…) We drove through the same area your group drove those cool roadsters along the coastline and it is one beautiful area. On another road trip to Oregon and Washington much later, the weather was terrific and coming back down to our stop over in San Francisco. That same coastline gave a different look to the coastal drive on a clear day. Since we were headed South on the other side of the road, the cliffside/oceanside and the big drop offs made the road more noticeable. The view? It is one great driving area for any type of automobile, from roadsters to sporty cars. YRMV
Hello, One of the reasons to want to live along this portion of the California coastline is that it has remained most of its original character from the way back time machine. Some development has taken place, but overall, the pristine beauty of the barren coastline, the ocean bashing the rocks and cliffs below make it what it is, today. It is worth it for the peace and quiet it offers, along with the natural beauty. For those fortunate few that live there, the only way in and out is at either end of the Highway 1 at the small towns. But, when you and your wife are driving a cool El Camino and looking at the amazing things along the coast, that point was rendered moot. The few drawbacks gets overlooked at what is in front of you. (As well as all around you...) But, sitting down for a coffee and snack, reminded us both of the Big Sur Coast dilemma farther South. If something happens and the main road in and out, along the coastal cities/towns, gets damaged or blocked, everyone is at the mercy of planning for such a disaster. Jnaki It is primarily an inconvenience to have to drive over a hundred miles in any direction to bypass the problem. Plus, although there are truck deliveries like elsewhere, they too have to make a roundabout delivery circuit when disaster strikes. So, the wait times for any deliveries are going to suffer. For everyone that has experienced this portion of America, it still is beautiful and wonders will never cease. But, it does have its drawbacks… There is an ocean bashing the bays, cliffs and nook/crannies, but no surf for daily surfing adventures. The distance to emergency places are a lot longer to get to than most places. In return, so are the services that supply most homes and businesses. Currently, there is a standard 2 hour window for home services provided by the vendors. During any crisis, the wait time and distance will increase for services. But, as a hot rod/cruising, road trip, highway with endless views, less people, it is almost heaven. It still will draw us back for another coastal cruise and the fun things along the way once this pandemic is over. Until then, it is locked in place vs. the variants... YRMV
