Technical What did you do with your car today? * NEW*

Removed passenger seat to begin install of seat belts before taking car to upholstery shop. This shows the 5/16" bolts coming from the bottom with one nut to lock bolt to body so can remove seats without having to go under the car. A second nut is added after the seat frame is added. Since we were going to seat belts, I wanted to upgrade the rear bolts to 7/16" which would be much stronger. The alignment of the seat frame with the retaining bolts was a bit off, too, so plan is to fix that as well.
Drilling the holes out to 7/16" went pretty quick and then I used a rat tail file to help relocate the bolts a little further outboard on each side. All went pretty well with my bolt stash giving me plenty of options. A little duct tape was substituted for a second set of hands in order to hold that inboard bolt until I could add a nut to the top side. That Backyard Buddy is great... and gets better every day as I grow older!
Old Murphy must have been watching as my newly reconfigured mounting bolts were still off... not as much; but still a bit off.

Heading down to the shop now to meet a customer, but yesterday I spent the day curled up in the dashboard of my Falcon, installing the electric wiper conversion motor, and started installing the AC evaporator/heater box.

 

I finished that up last week. I now have 3-point retracing inertia reel belts in all four seating positions.

I scaled the mounting positions based off of the wife's modern car. The positions turned out great.

Replaced the small air cleaners with 59 Pontiac Tri Power set up . This set has the 2 big end carbs and the smaller center carb. total cfm at full throttle is 1223 . My smaller air cleaners were actually choking down engine causing rich mixture .

 

Today I made a sealing adapter to put a thermostat housing intended for a Chevrolet, over a thermostat for a Chrysler.

They have the same bolt pattern, but the sealing surfaces don't match up well enough to actually seal. That, and on the Chevy, the thermostat recess is in the manifold. On the Chrysler, it is in the housing.

I spun the Moroso piece on the lathe to make a bevel for a smooth transition.

This was a random piece of 7075 aluminum. I save my drop from other projects, until it is too small to be clamped.

I was using my dad's old drill gun to make some holes bigger. The drill bit got hung up and the way I had my hand it bumped the trigger lock which sent it spinning out of control. Which of course in the time I was able to react the damn thing jumped up and cracked me right on the ankle

July 7th 2021 At four inches, my biggest mic is too small for this job, so I ordered a five inch mic, one day delivery. Cleaned the number one rod, cap, wrist pin and bolts in an overnite Evapo-Rust submersion and fiddled with the piston some. The rings are flush and corroded. I couldn't budge any of them.

I took the piston to the Sunday coffee cruise-in. John didn't make it but Dave Sexton told me the marks on the thrust sides of the piston were from knurling and they were still pretty fresh. I took a look at all the pistons when I got back to the BillyBob Shop and they all have the knurling.

Continued to measure the pistons with micrometer and cylinder bores with dial bore gauge and telescoping bore gauge until I had confidence in my measurements. Have decided to stay with the pistons I have.

Got the corroded, stuck rings out of piston one with MAP torch, Kroil penetrating oil, small pick and needlenose pliers hand-to-hand combat technique. Background music was Jimmy Buffet's Banana Wind.

 

I bought a spotlight a while back thinking I needed a left and a right so I only grabbed the one. Last night I was farting around with it then it dawned on me that if I just spin the light around 180 degrees that I can use it on the other side. Hopefully, the other one is still there

 

Charged the Model A’s AC for the first time. It was 116 F here a week ago.

The Defasio brothers came to the shop and got the new carpet installed, they did a great job on the seats. Hopefully I’ll get the rest of the interior back in this weekend.

 

I just took my Ford small block, rods and crank to the machinist, a major step for me after working on my '29AA for the past 47 years. Once I get the bill and figure out what I've got left in the budget, I'll decide when I can get the transmission sorted out. What's motivated me to take these big steps forward this summer? A year ago I was on death's doorstep, undergoing an esophagectomy to remove cancer. Two CT scans later show no recurrence so far. My next scan is in late August. By then I'm hoping to get my engine back and hear good news from my oncologist. Either way, I won't set deadlines, but I will keep pushing toward the goal of getting my dream truck together and driving it.

Thanks, guys, for having my back! High Test, that AA is right on, color, stance, utilitarian purpose. Can anyone tell me what gauge the express beds were? I'll be making my own and am hoping to bend up 16-gauge into a low, long bed, but would use 18-gauge if that's the correct thickness.

Got my car aligned. He had me come over to assist. It was interesting as I've never done this before. 56 Pontiac with 51 Chevy straight axle. We didn't have it far off but he had to adjust the toe in and camber. Noticeable difference on the road.

 

Bought a old stock car 36 3 window GM body , it ran at the Reading Fairgrounds when I was a kid .
