This is one of the HD units with a ball bearing in the rear - 45 amp, I think.

...just another shot at sunset with a beautiful moon, with the generator doing what it does best...I understand at idle the power to charge and supply is minimal...

I have noticed the brushes are nearing their maximum wear...A refurbishment is near due...I not much of a generator surgeon so I may bring it to a local starter/alternator shop...

Anyone replace brushes? I suppose it's worth going through performing a thorough inspection since it's out anyways...Do you also include the regulator in the package...I haven't phoned yet just curious...​

 

Yeah, there are some good ideas or "might as wells". Undercut the mica on the commutator segments if required, and polish it up. Sand the brushes down so they conform to the commutator. Maybe a new bearing or bushing. Careful with the regulators, improper "cleaning" will actually cause problems.

 

Thanks 64, this Hotrod just runs fantastic, I just peeked in the backside of the Geny and anticipate if I don't get it done I may end up stranded...I'm surprised they didn't make swapping of brushes a fairly quick procedure...it's a delco remy by the way...they are pretty much right in your face...

 

Not familiar with those. If you look at the Ford generator (for example) the whole back plate pops right off, as an assembly, to include the brushes. Handy to keep an extra ready to go.

So the brushes could be replaced quickly without removal of any belts or the generator itself. Takes just a few minutes. A couple wires and bolts is all.

 

That may actually be the same deal here...I have to do a bit more research...

Was the only generator at Oklahoma City STREETROD Nationals this weekend, that was seen.

 

My 61 Chevy generator took a dump yesterday. Can I get another at O’reileys are Autozone???

 

I just stopped into an alternator/starter service company to inquire about re-brushing it as visually they are getting close to no more...

I am going to just remove it at the end of the month as the driving season will effectively be over...

I was told it would take a couple of days depending on part availability...

The other thing I asked was can they just replace brushes and was told they would disassemble clean and check for any other issues...

This thing despite needing brushes works very well and I just want to know I can depend on it...

This car has been on the road since 2010 so I consider it nessessary maintenance...

Why would you not consider this over a replacement? I suppose price...

I'm not sure how much sticker shock I will get but fingers crossed it will be reasonable...

Hope you have a good experience, breakdowns suck and this seems to be your reason for looking for a fix...

 

Best generator ever, used around hunting/fishing campsite and for remote location power tools. Was on a 1966 Chevy pickup.

 

Hmmmm...that's for a closed hood Hotrod that's for sure......must be a high output model for 110 volt tools but I'm sure there were additional things to get that voltage upped...did they have 3 prong in 66?
