Customs Will 52-54 Merc hood fit Ford

I like the hood scoop element on the Mercury hood and would like to have that on my 53 Ford sedan. I could make a fiberglass mold easy. A steel replica really isn’t that hard. Much more easy would be the bolt on option. Anybody tried this?
By the way, don’t know who owns this car, but I think I’m gonna use a 57 bumper like this, with a bullet grill.

 

I’m bumping my own thread. Seems like somebody would have already made a mold of these.

 

I believe you can swap the entire front clip but not the individual parts.

 

A lot of cars get mix and match front treatments that are more like a square peg in a round hole, but IMHO that one looks really good.

 

That is what I understand as well. The front of the hood drops lower under the headlights into the grill opening on the Merc hood.

 

Crazy Steve is right. The hood hinges are identical between the two cars but the hoods will not interchange, I believe the Mercury hood is also longer than the Ford hood, so even if you modified your grille opening it would still need to be cut down.

If you can find a Mercury hood it wouldn't be impossible to cut the skin off and re-skin the Ford hood with the scoop portion. 55-56 Dodge cars have a similar scoop shape that maybe could also be used.

Truth is, the Thunderbird scoop has the same basic shape. 10 years ago, I would just start cutting, and gluing to stretch one out.

 

Okay, forget this. After looking over a few Mercs, the best thing is to swap the entire front clip, or just go find myself a Mercury. I like the look so much better than my Ford.

 

First step on figuring if you can swap complete noses is to measure from the center of the front wheel to the back edge of the front fender as the Ford has a 115 inch wheelbase and the Merc has a 118 inch wheelbase and you would have to make sure that the extra 3 inchers weren't in the nose.

I had a couple '54 Fords back in the '60's, Dad a couple of '52's. I was chatting with a gentleman with a real nice '54 Mercury at a show a few years ago about the differences between king pin and ball joint front suspensions on these cars. He said there are different distances in this area as he waved his hand around the front of the cowl forward to the rear of the front wheel opening. Sadly he has since passed, another library closed.
