I'm neutral because it's a case by case analysis. Sometimes they look incredible, sometimes they look horrible. They are ALWAYS a bold statement, and the rest of the car better be suited to the task, and the proper theme carried throughout. You can't build a mild car with canted quads. The back of the car needs to keep up with the front at least to a certain degree.

Sorry, but I just don't like them at all. customised or OEM.

Chrysler got it just about perfect with this one !!

when done right canted quads add elegance to a custom and dress the eye .

And @Moriarity ’S cars are perfect examples of customs doing canted quads perfectly !!

  7. By '59 if your custom didn't have canted or factory quads, you were nobody....

  8. Depends on the car, some look good and some are uglier than a mud fence.

IMHO Mercury's don't look right with them in any configuration. HRP

  9. Of coarse I like all the Chrysler cars that came stock with them and most all the customs that applied the quad feature. Wasn't there some others from Europe that had them before Chrysler ?

  10. IMHO almost all use of canted quads seems forced and not complimentary to the vehicle. Few exceptions do do exist, but in general they were a bad idea then and still a bad idea now.

The 61 DeSoto could put a guy off of them forever....but there are a few customs and stockers that look all right. On a positive note, you never see one of those DeSotos in real life, mostly.

  14. I usually like them. As noted, with a custom, its all in the execution, you can make it look really good or blotch and have it close....but no cigar...

Moriarity's blue '55 above looks nice to me, as much a I like the stock front. With a nice grill and bumpers they are complimentary, not overpowering.

They looked damned good when Paul Harper rolled Red Rage out for the first time after it was painted.
Kneeling beside the car is Bob Jasper figuring out what he is going to do on the interior and how many $$$$ he is going to hit Paul for.

Not quad but canted. :) '55 Chev Grill #1.jpg

  19. I like them when on a mid 50s and later car. They can work on a 49-51 Merc or Ford, but its usually more misses then hits on those, but tri fives and other mid 50s cars can usually look great with canted quads. Marks 55's are some of the best examples of use. The canted trend had not quite hit Portland in 59 but it did get its quads with the Chrysler headlights.

'58 Lincoln, '59 Buick, 61-62 Chrysler, I love them all, and they can look really great on a custom when done right. It's not a guarantee they'll look great, but that's true of every modification. Even Rolls Royce and Ferrari offered canted headlights at one point.

As you likely know, 1961 was both a recession year (‘58/‘61) and the year Mopar axed DeSoto. Only about 3,034 (reportedly) were made. Given the attrition rate due to both rust and terminably UGLY, they are really scarce 60 years on.

looks like they're canted in at the top, slightly...although it may just be the camera angle....

Definitely need some more pictures of it! old customs like that are rather rare.

  26. Most of the time I don't like them. But I like both of @Moriarity s 55s

I've always liked the look of '58 Lincoln headlight doors. Took a set off a car at the wreckers but eventually traded them away. Didn't have a car that would look good with them.
