    Headlight door.

    Back lite.

    Mast jacket.

    These are terms I first learned when working in the junkyard. I bet a lot of guys don't even know what they refer to.

    Quite a few similarities to Australia :

    fender -> wing
    rocker (body panel) -> sill
    distributor -> dizzy
    turn signal -> indicator
    hood -> bonnet
    trunk -> boot
    transmission -> gearbox
    parking/emergency brake -> handbrake
    tire -> tyre
    running light (front) -> sidelight
    tail light -> rear light
    low beam -> dipped beam
    windshield -> windscreen
    rumble seat -> dickey seat

    Throw out bearing. It's only a bearing when the clutch is in. If anything should be throw in bearing.

    Okay, that butt plug thing sure as hell doesn't belong on any car I own! LOL
    A friend from Ireland calls the turn signals indicators which I think is better; how many of us have had some idiot turn on their turn signal and immediately start coming into your whereas an indicator "indicates" what you are about to do not what you are doing.

    And I guess for the past forty years or so automatics are "standard"...

  14. Back in the early 70s I had a 1956 Packard Caribbean convertible.
    Went from Kingston NY to Hunter Mountain Ski center in Hunter NY.
    Up Rt 32 to Rt 23A , then up the mountain. Very winding, and steep, up hill
    all the way, to a car show. We were 6 people in the car, including my wife's
    grandmother. when we left, I had a very squishy brake pedal. I drove the
    car all the way to Kingston, down the very winding Rt23A and on to Rt32
    and to Kingston, about 20 miles total,on only the push-button Ultramatic
    transmission and the EMERGENCY brake!
    It will always be an emergency brake to me!

    It you owned a Ford with an automatic trans in the 50-60’s you sure as well knew it was a parking brake. If you left one running and got out of the car you sure as hell going to have an “emergency” that meant running after your car before it hit something..

    It saddens me that ''mast jacket support'' has become "column drop'' to folks nowdays ...

    Don't forget the cogbox or the sludge-a- matic transmagression (old car yard ad from years ago). Or sailing down the hill in sloppy cog or angel gear.

  25. Yeah, wrist pins are commonly called gudgeon pins or gudgeons.

    Now that all the car part names are cleared up, you are ready to take it for a spin. Just remember that you drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway.

    And the Navy used to (still might) send submariners for nuclear training to a site out side of Idaho Falls. Go figure, join the Navy to sail the 7 seas and end up in Idaho.:cool:
