Technical I got a question about DODGE engine mounts

Hey guys , I’m working on a period correct “thing”
With a 318 DODGE engine.
It needs mounts , do these mounts look like something off a factory Dodge configuration or something home brewed ?

Dodges used two basic styles, the flat pad with studs was the early one. It requires the correct brackets to bolt to the engine. The round through bolt style was used later (starting early 70s?) and bolts directly to the engine, then you put tabs in front and behind and a bolt through it.

And late 50's Dodge used the round style with a cup that fit over it.

 

What year 318?
I would start buy looking at mounts from that year.

 

Jim is correct. The MOPAR engine mounts went to a through bolt design around 73'. The one's before that were prone to failing and separating which could lead to some excitement if the drivers side fails... Engine torque will lift the engine from the frame and apply the throttle. That taught me the value of a torque strap in a slightly off topic Dart with a 340!

 

The Ford Small block engine mounts are two bolts on the block where as the ones that Vandenplas posted were mounted to ear's on the block which is a very MOPAR sort of attachment style.

 

The mounts on the engine in question are Ford mounts, but they're upside down from how Ford installed them. Normally the wide part goes to the block, the bolts are vertical. And the narrower side has a through bolt, that holds it to the frame bracket.

It sure does look like an upside down Ford mount. The Chrysler block has bosses for three bolts but the Ford mount has "ears" for only two. Are there three bolts attaching the mount to the engine or only two? If there's only two then someone probably got creative and used Ford mounts. If there's three bolts then you probably have some kind of odd commercial Mopar mount. Either way, that's an interesting way to mount a Mopar.

 

They are Ford mounts. I've worked on a lot of cars over the decades, I can spot a Ford motor mount or a Dodge motor mount rather easily.

Working at a junkyard 40 years ago taught me a lot, that I'll never forget.

It looks like the two mounts might be different from each other, so look them over carefully. I think this type mount was used mostly on the 289-351W type engines.

 

As Jim said they don’t look like Ford mounts, they are Ford mounts, 100% not Dodge mounts of any kind

'71 Torino, 302. Both right an left are the same, slight off set front to back so one mounts backwards of the other. Height and sideways measurement will vary about a 1/2" between 302/351.

 

Man those are some beefy forks !

 

Most of the Mopar mounts I have worked on had a U shaped piece of metal bolted to the block in the 4 holes , and the mount was a simple square pad with 2 studs sticking out opposite each other for mounting .

That big ole rivet screams Ford. But if they don't fit right you can also try the '70-'88 Cutlass mounts. The through bolt ears on those mounts are more forgiving and allow flexing to fit. They are similar shaped and use a large tab rather than rivet to prevent excess movement.
If you can, try and use a single large bolt with spacers and shims rather than the four bolt/nut mess.
Single shear and all that.

 

With the yellow paint, diamond plate and the way things are set up May I assume the rig in question is some sort equipment or a special purpose truck?

I'm not seeing anything that comes close to that in a search for 318 Dodge motor mounts. (1) dodge 318 motor mounts - Bing images

 

Now I am curious. I believe the round Mopar mounts arrived in 1957. I have a 57 factory hemi Dodge car and those are round. I have a 57 341 Desoto hemi and those are round. I have two 330 Desoto hemi's and I think those were square. I have a 55 Dodge Lancer with original poly engine and a 56 or 57 truck 315 poly with idk what for engine mounts. But, I will have to find out now. Thought everything was square mounts for Mopar through 56 and everything after was the round ones (which differ between Dodge and Desoto too, I found out...).

 

See the project vehicle is 70's though, so that is past the date of all my old Mopar engines. But, I have a 72 Dodge power wagon with a 360 that I will take a look at. Those pictured do look like upside-down Ford mounts with the ears bent 90 degrees though...

 

the fork lift he's working on, with the 318 dodge engine, uses Ford motor mounts. Dodge never had a mount like that.

 

When it comes to Chrysler, never say never. If someone had the money, and wanted a Mopar motor (or some other major parts) installed in what ever, Chrysler would do it, up through at least the early to mid 1970s. Any production motor (including those available through Chrysler industrial division) was available to be installed into anything.
Chrysler installed a lot of motors into industrial or commercial vehicles. Most of those installations required special mounting brackets and motor mounts. To assume Chrysler only used production mounts and brackets would be an incorrect assumption. The brackets that bolt to the engine block may start out as production pieces, but modifications were pretty normal in custom installations.

The motor mounts in the pictures appear to have pieces that started out as production brackets that are bolted to the engine block. The parts that are bolted up to the frame don't appear to be production parts, but they could have been transmission mounts, or frame mounts from the old beam axle truck days, or some parts someone found that matched up to the frame. If enough of these fork lifts were made, Chrysler could have tooled up for a short production run, but the odds were better they would have outsourced the frame mounts they needed. They could have modified either or both the engine brackets and the frame mounts. Gene

 

Well update .

my parts guy got a left and right side mount for a mustang 2 / maverick as that’s pretty much all that was available through our local jobber.

While not exactly identical to what came off, pretty darn close and only required some finessing with a hammer to tweak the ears and get them lined up with the engine mounting holes.
