Heck yes! My last four cars have been three on the tree!

    ‘47 Ford Tudor
    ‘59 Custom 300
    ‘54 Ford Custom Line

And now a ‘47 Mercury Convertible

  2. TOTT is traditional and has a high cool factor, couple it up with a white tee , black leather jacket and some sunglasses and go back in time for a fun ride.....My 57 150 Chevy 235 six , solid lifters and three on the tree is a timepiece. I like showing the younger generation some automotive history too.

Yep, love 3 on the tree. Have owned a '64 Belair with it as well as a '69 Camaro, with a 350" 2 barrel, factory stock
and because you had to put it into reverse to remove the key, everyone assumed it was an automatic.. Fun to drive.

What ever happened to column shift? Where did the “tree” come from? I’m guess these guys have a tree in their new cars because the turn lights are on one side and the headlights with are on the other. You either have a floor or column shift. Must have something to do with stance.... just 2 of the many things about a car I don’t understand. Glad I’m old!

I earned my driver's license in '76 driving a '67 Biscayne with an inline 6 and 3 on the tree.... I've been driving "stick" cars ever since.... I never get sick of them... Well maybe when I'm stuck in heavy traffic....:(

Here, "Three on the Tree" is not a common term. Really it's rather juvenile.

    Column Shift...
For whatever reason, most of the time this refers to an automatic.

    Stick Shift....
We hardly ever use that term. What we call a manual transmission vehicle is a Straight Shift.

    Here's the terminology we use.....

My 1951 Ford Coupe is a straight shift car with a Three Speed on the Column.
My 1964 Ford Fairlane Sports Coupe has a console but it is column shift.

We've got Japanese minibuses here with five on the tree.

In Saab rally cars of the '60s the column shift was used to very good effect by the likes of Erik Carlsson.

I like the 3 on the tree in my Studebaker just because it is old and archaic. It also functions as an anti-theft device these days, as few would know how to use it.

  16. Do you have a build thread for that car? I'm in the planning stages of a 303 with a column shifted 41 Lincoln box in a 32 frame. I know your frame has an X member, but would love to see how you tackled different aspects.

I had a 32 coupe in the 50's that I had a column shift in and it was on the left side of the column. I could change it from normal pattern to reversed in about 5 minutes. It was fun watching other people trying to drive it.

I had it on a Chevy c10 I used to have, and yeah, it was my anti-theft device!

An older gentleman in my neighborhood bought a 1963, or maybe it was a ‘64, Buick LeSabre with a three speed on the column. Other than an AM radio and heater that’s all the car was optioned with. It had dog dish hubcaps, black walls and no tinted glass.
A good friend bought a new ‘67 Camaro, with a 2 barrel 210 horse 327, three on the tree, but we but a Hurst in that one pretty soon after he bought it.

When I tried starting my 50 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupe for the first time ...that "anti-theft" set up had me scratching my ass...till I figured it out...actually it still had the original owners manual in the glove box....read the instructions first....turn key to on...push clutch pedal to floor...starter button is on the floor under the clutch pedal..old Buicks had the same set up except it was on the accelerator..turn key to on and step down on the accelerator pedal.
Saabs were mentioned earlier....I had one, a 66 2 stroke 3cylinder 3 carbs...drove that thing for two weeks

...could not get it in reverse, had my passagers get out and push it back wards if needed..then one day while having a friend push me out of his drive way his dad asked what the problem was ...no reverse....he returns with ..you do know its a 4 speed ..right...aaahh..really..then he told how to get reverse.....son of a .....guess it worked after all...it didn't have the original owners manual in the glove box.
Then he showed me how to pump the clutch with the E brake on and it made the car look like it was humping something.
    Cool.
