I don't really want to contradict particularly since it is generally not widely known. But Zora built an L88 mule in '65.

For the 1966 model year there were 4 L88's built that became know as the Four Kings. The 4 cars did go out into the public realm. They all still exists and their locations are known. One has been posted in this thread. Probably more than once. It's a black and white photo of a dark colored '66 coupe with Steve McQueen getting in or out of the car. The car is actually Milano Maroon with a saddle interior. It is the only 1 of the 4 that continued with aluminum heads. The alloy heads failed on the other 3 cars during initial dyno testing. Chevy supplied the car for a Sports Illustrated article in which McQueen road tested 4 cars. The other 3 cars were more exotic like Ferrari and Porsche. McQueen was so impressed by the Corvette he said he had to have it and wanted to buy it. Zora didn't have the authority to do that so the car was leased to McQueen for a year. Then sold to him when it came off which ever fleet it was assigned to.

He said it was exhausting to drive that set up on the street but I believe it was how that made extra money on the side. Don’t think commute to work, think cruise Van Nuys Blvd.

Ahhh come on 4.5’s are fun When I put my 4.56’s in the 57 with the solid cam 283 it was like I just put a 327 in. Granted I had a 3 spd on the column with OD. . When the 4spd went in I kept the 4.56 posi for a while because in city traffic even on the freeway I never got to go very fast.

  5. I had a 327 with a wide ratio muncie, 12 bolt chevy in a 68 pontiac lemans cosmetically cloned in to a GTO, it was fun but the commute to work sucked! I’m sure gas in 1986 was only about 85 cents tho

I don't recall if this photo of Big John Mazmanian's '61 has been posted before. Note red painted 4-71 blower.

If Big John wasn't the first to customize the new '63 coupe he was one of the first. He bought this car early and took it straight to Junior's House of Color for some custom touches and paint. Photos by Peterson photographer Pat Brollier in December 1962.

That's not John. I believe that's the late Rich Siroonian, John's nephew.

Looking at that car makes me weak in the knees. I'm thinking that the 117 HP figure is wrong, though, because the stock car was rated at 150 HP....amazing piece of history...complete with a supercharger gauge. Sweet.

  20. If you can’t find words, just look in a dictionary.

Having experienced a similar event with three-out-of-four wheels off the ground under full power, I can attest to the fact that the next two or three seconds of that run will be among the most memorable of the weekend!

@anthony myrick your Steve McQueen picture was just posted last Friday with a little history at the top of this page just 24 posts back. Maybe a little too soon for a repeat.

  29. Wonder who Elvis has in the motorhome?
    Shelly Fabre or Ann Margret?
Looks more like Fred and Barney
