1949 Ford pickup tank, perfect fit, enclosed with two 6V Optima batteries under the armrests. Been using this tank since 1961.

built the car in my avatar in the eighties with brand new idea of the time, plastic saddle tanks sounded like a good idea. there isn't much in this world i can't tolerate but i hate these tank's with a passion, i have many bad experiance stories at the gas pump. inside 60's pickup tank mounted behind rear seat work's best for sedan and for 28 pickup i'm building now original were henry thought it should be. work's for me

It only holds two gallons, but fortunately it doesn't have to go far. ;)

Kidding, of course. The original builder kept the stock tank. The Moon tank is functional by switching a couple of valves. Depending how it's configured, the mechanical fuel pump is supplied either pump gas from the original tank or race gas from the Moon tank.

Here's the 29 pickup I just bought a couple of weeks ago. Has a good tank in it but I'm wondering about the safety. I'm glad this thread came up.

The original tanks have been good for 90 years

Yes, that's true. This is our first Model A that will actually run and I was just considering the options.

As far as safety goes, I don't think the placement of the stock tank is any worse than having the tank behind the seat as in newer trucks, or behind the rear axle (like mine), even saddle tanks are vulnerable to side impacts.

From a safety standpoint this link should help put your mind at ease. One of the things they talk about is how the original "filter screen" insert was not just for catching junk when you were gassing up but was a key part of the tanks safety features. It was technology borrowed from gas lights used on mining helmets. The perforated steel kept flame from passing thru and starting explosions in the coal mines when they were surrounded by explosive dust. I think the '30-'31 style one is reproduced. If your '28-'29 one is missing you'd probably have to find an original.

I'm not particularly worried about the original tank. I've ridden motorcycles all my life with the gas in my lap. As I said earlier, just considering all the options. I imagine I'll leave it just like it is. All that being said, that is a very interesting article, thanks for posting it.

I think if you get hit hard enough for the stock tank to be a problem you're in deep doo-doo anyway. The only question is, do you want it fried or not.
