I just picked up a M/T Pontiac Tempest 4cyl with chain driven 471 blower. Scott single throat injector with early EELCO fuel shutoff attached to the injector, roller cam,I got history on it. The guy said it was last run in his father's bonneville car in 1963, called the Baby Whale. Owner was Ron Benham
Has an Arma Steel crank in it and supposedly Mickey himself built it in 1962

I'm thinking that there is some info on that engine in a Hot Rod magazine somewhere between 61 and 63. Or it's twin.

Some info on one of his 4 banger projects Mickey Thompson Attempt | World of Speed

Neat stuff. My guess is the clutch C4 transmission is from something else...they didn't exist in 63....

but then the stories get confused over the years, also.

I have a feeling the parts got lost over the years, maybe tried to use in different car? I looked at the picture of the baby whale and it has TWO injectors and mine has one, so he definitely changed a few things.

That is an incredible find. It’s amazing that it survived. You my friend have an addiction to vintage motors.

A great piece of racing history there!
Regardless of the pedigree, it's something to behold. Any plans?

  20. I saw you post this on FB. Such a cool engine. Burke LeSage drove a lot of different cars on the lakes. A couple reasons, he was a good driver AND he was a small dude! He could fit where others could not.

The C4 was made from 1964 models through the late 70s, I believe. The "engineering number" on the case, and other parts, will give you an idea of when it was made. The early models are C4AP.... while the later ones, with some revisions to the sizes of shafts, etc are D0AP... The ford part number system uses the first two characters to tell you the decade and year the part was first used, so C4 means 1964, while D0 means 1970.

I don't think this trans even attaches to the motor from what I have seen so far.

I am wondering how the C4 front pump is driven, or not?

good question, since there doesn't seem to be the three fingers thingy that would fit inside the release bearing, and drive the pump. Might use an external pump on the engine? or maybe they didn't get that far? :)

  28. Well, the injection setup is different from the original, why not a different valve cover? I'm just glad the majority of it is still intact!

    Hello,

What a find and grab. We learn something every day about some different modes of engine parts from those early years in the Bonneville/drag racing world. The Scott single fuel injector reminded me of those huge single Hilborn Injector units that were run by the Howard Cam Group in 1959-60.

Hilborn was still completing the design of the two port injectors and were not on the market as yet. Was one better than two? At any rate, now, you are a historian of the times from so long ago. Congratulations.

A while back, in a discussion with Donny Johansen, the topic came up about the single Hilborn Injector for drag racing.
    upload_2021-5-16_4-34-8.png
I asked him about the single Hilborn Injection unit. He had seen the movie I took of the Twin Bear in the pits at Lions and racing against Lefty Mudersbach. He said that the diameter was a huge opening, but within a year, the size of the new twin injectors surpassed the diameter of the big single. So, the twin injector was more efficient. Thus, the popularity of the twin started on a lot of race cars and continues into history as the first two port, top mounted injection system for a 671 supercharger.

The idea of a single huge Hilborn Injector was a new item developed at the request of Howard Johansen back then. It continued in several applications. The Scott unit seems like it found a new home at Mickey Thompson’s Westside of Long Beach shop from 1960 to the application on the cool Lakester. Now, you have one of the rare items from the 1960's development and only a few have seen it. It looks perfect on the smaller 471 supercharger.

Great find and nice stock pile of too much stuff and too many projects… ha!

It must have been a Howard Cam thing, as the early Hirshfield/Cook Studebaker 2 door sedan also had one.

The early, Howard Cam, Studebaker Sedan was one of the only users of the single Hilborn Injector for racing.

The crank pictured has a thin casting parting line plus part numbers cast into it so at some point the lower end has been changed and the crank replaced with a cast one.

From the looks of those piston crowns the pistons may be cast too.
