Since thee isn't a manual for these old Fairbanks transmissions, I have had to feel my way through the dark. After mount my new clutch, I realized that the only way to make it all work is to have an adapter cut. $150 on a one day turn around, not bad. Now I need to find a roll cage guy.

I'll take a look but I think they are nothing fancy, I bought them for $20 just so it could roll.

  20. It did not. Corvair was aluminum and maybe a Chrysler box.

  21. I use the reversed 'Vair. Pretty much the standard Gasser box.

I have a reversed corvair box but it won't fit with the starter being on the DS of the 426 hemi so i'm looking for other options.

  24. I had the same problem with my 354 hemi. It is actually a long bell housing 331 that has been bored to 354. I solved this by welding a starter flange on the bottom bell housing pan on the passenger side.

Here is my gear that goes thru the factory hole in the frame rail. See the starter hole cover plate behind the gear.

Here are two views of the new starter mount. Welded up out of 1/4" steel plate, welded to the cast iron pan then steel reinforcement plates bolted to the mount and cast piece in case the iron weld didn't hold. Been working great for 30 years.

Thanks for the pics..Thats pretty darn cool..I was actually thinking about ways to relocate the starter! if it was on the pass side it would solve the steering issue.
