Folks Of Interest Hay Party of 6...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dan Hay, May 7, 2021.

  1. I have a wife and 4 kids. I love them dearly, and rarely do I want to leave them home. We have the dreaded daily driver Minivan, but I'd like to have an old car/truck that we can all fit in.

My question for you is: what HAMB friendly vehicle would you build/purchase if you had to haul around 6 people?

I had a '65 Coupe DeVille at one point. That thing was so cool! Sat way too low, rode like a Caddy and could haul plenty of ppl comfortably.

I like the Suburban idea... But I'm also partial to the mid-'50s to mid-'60s station wagons from various manufacturers.
(it's no secret that the Fords are my favorite)

Any big old 50's to 64 4 door or wagon should fit your needs, The GM cars are Koolest IMO, some outstanding like the Buick Caballero, all good, just buy what you can afford, a suggestion, buy a finished car as the chrome/stainless bill on the old land yachts will be more than you can buy a finished car for. Good Luck, Have Fun. !

Kim has been begging for a 1959 Kingswood for years. They are super pricey.

I personally dig the Mercury Commuters.

When we were young....the family cars (4 kids and two parents) included a 50ish Lincoln, 57 Plymouth wagon, 64 Citroen ID19 wagon, 60 VW Bug, 67 Plymouth Fury wagon, 61 Impala convertible, and a 64 Volvo 544. The wagons were the most comfy, especially the 67 with the 3rd seat in back. The bug was fun, my twin and I are the youngest, and we could fit in the area behind the rear seat.

Later...when my wife and I had 3 kids of our own...we could get by with 2 door cars just fine. But we also had a 66 suburban for a while, it was pretty roomy. And a 58 Brookwood, when the kids were really little.

Sold my '63 BelAir wagon last year. That had plenty of room for 6, & still room to haul stuff in the back. I love big cars.

61 to 65 Chevy wagons are still reasonable and are decent cars to boot.

  22. Yep, what many have already said. You either need an old suburban or a wagon. I know a guy that used to have a pretty cool 56 Buick 4-door hardtop that would have worked. Oh, wait... :D

  23. Too soon...:) I should say any options should have an open driveline and a good transmission...

I like the 54 ish suburban idea with barn doors in back. The 64 ish 9 passenger wagons you lose most of your storage capacity when you pop up that third row.

The burb I feel like you could configure it a lot of different ways. Also climbing to a third row even if it’s threw the back gate in a wagon sucks. A burb would have way more head room for maneuvering

Suburbans from the era had a full width seat in back, and a 2/3 seat in the middle, so you could get to the back seat. If you removed a seat, you'd remove the center seat, then move the full seat up to the middle.

Most folks probably aren't aware of how they worked...

Most of them I see don’t even have any seats in them anymore so my thinking was you could do pretty much anything you wanted.

if you had the back seats on a common track and they fold forward/flat or even tuck and roll you could make a lot of room with out even having to pull them say you come across some plywood or 32 rails that need a ride home.
