Art & Inspiration UNIQUE DASH KNOBS

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Apr 23, 2021.

  1. I have always liked seeing guys that use knobs from different makes & models to create a interesting dash, I have also seen mismatched knobs where something has been added later.

I have also seen guys make their own knobs which really are impressive,

Lets see what you hot rod and custom guys have come up with. HRP

  2. I used some cabinet knobs that I though had a bit of a deco look to them.

  3. When I was building the wagon I redesigned the dash but wanted to stay with the original '54 dash knobs, since I was rearranging the knobs I sought out a few extra knobs and set about to make the air conditioning knobs look like they were not a after thought.

This is what the controls looked like when I installed it and it just looked out of place.

This is with the '54 Ford dash knobs, not perfect but a improvement. HRP

  4. This is a work in progress for my Chevy truck. First, I made the Tiger Eye T-handle style shift knob and liked it so much, I decided to make dash knobs to match. A new harness was going in but had to wait while I searched hard for this vintage chrome bezel to mount the switches to get everything working. Then I had to find just the right, matching Tiger Eye gemstones to replace the bill** knobs. I figure I'm about 90% done so by summer, I should be singing in the kitchen.

I used readily available 1940 Ford standard reproduction knobs on my 3 window.

I'm out of luck for the cool all matching nob thing, only have one nob,an that works the lights<even has a picture of a light on it !
I did add a few years back a tiny little button key pad, luck it is small an most don't even see it. Had to do it,as my local radio station stopped playing my 1955 to 1965 records= I had too put in a chip player hiding up under dash with 2-- 8in. speakers, has 200 rock n roll 1955 to 65 songs. It dose beat my old transitor with ear plug an 9volt bat. But can't find were an when is the sock-hop!

Acrylic grapes turned down ,also the door locks . This was the owners idea ,my wife. Tricky little buggers to turn down due to the wire inside and inherent cracks. She still has ideas of resin casting some clear blue tiki style knobs . Just need to find the right size small tiki to use as a pattern. Hint hint >>>

Lots of great ideas. On 40's I use the stock type knobs for all control but buy the ones with a stud for aftermarket lighter. Then stick stud to grinder-gets hot-pull it out. Now I have knobs to adapt to all switches and controls--also sand the dot off the end and repolish-have a bunch around here for next 40 whether std or dlx

I really like this look, reminds me of a early sports car dash.

It's not just the knobs but the control cables they attach to. I like to use ones from a 1964 Valiant because I owned one and liked the black trim ring that had white letters which labeled what the thing controlled. Unfortunately, scrap '64 Valiants aren't as plentiful now IMG_1108.JPG as when I began doing this.

OK my car is just a driver ok. My new headlight switch was that ugly billet switch that comes on most of the after market knobs. So I used the black cap of a WD 40 can, filled it with black silicone and stuck it on the billet knob. I don't have a picture but in looks like a old knob, much better I think.

  21. I have seen small tiki door lock knobs (pull up / push down) around the place. Looks about the right size to cast into resin.

  24. Yeah, if you look at 'miniature' drawer/cabinet pull knobs there's quite few choices. Can be a bit of a PITA to mod into dash knobs in some cases, but no worse than any home-made knobs.

I just saw another example of this in the classifieds - gmc1941 is selling a '40 Ford pickup with this gauge setup. Works great.
