Technical Building a new Winfield...

  1. I would say either fully polish, or fully copper plate.
I'm a fan of the polish look myself.

  2. Either way, they are objects of art that would look equally phenomenal regardless of where or what they are attached to!

  3. What CAD program did you model it in? Just curious.

pretty impressive project and parts.Tooling on these parts would be pretty cost prohibitive even if it was built offhore.
Then try to find a caster that would be interested at the lower quantitys that would be another hurdle.Machining out of billit on a automated five axis and you could get the price down to cost effective.I applaud your determination to see this through. Most dont understand all of the work behind a project like this.

The UPS guy delivered my special tooling order today... now if only I can get some time in the shop this weekend to make some progress on the new throttle barrel.

Was able to get most of the throttle barrel internal section finished up yesterday. Ran into an unexpected clearance issue on the butterfly side of the venturi, so am waiting for some new tools... again!

Here is a pic of the top half of the venturi and the spray bar air inlets

While waiting for the special tools to finish the throttle barrel... I made some more fuel inlet blocks, and also some Winfield S-A to Model A manifold adapters

Last weekend was dedicated to ironing out the issues of the first part... and it was no small task! Tooling was adjusted, fixturing was reworked, programs were reconfigured, and somehow I still found the time to run another part... but this time without the oops!

As long as I can keep from screwing this one up during the next operation, this throttle barrel should finish into a good part!

You might want to check this youtube out, they do alot of stuff with Winfielf carbs!

The further along I get into this project... the more I realize that calling Brauns would have saved me a ton of time and money! But for me, it’s all about the adventure! So when I’m done, I’ll have what I wanted, and if there’s interest maybe even a little side business making parts for these notoriously mixed up carbs.

Here is a shot of the original literature showing the throttle barrel in cross section during all 3 fuel circuits. Once I have 5 of these buggers to go along with my float bowls, it’s time for the throttle plates... and testing!!!:D

Was at it again today... this time building throttle plates. Not near as simple as a conventional butterfly plate, these are basically a segmented ball bearing. After a bit of head scratching, I was able to make some chips and now have a couple throttle plates that fit my new throttle barrels

    Here we are getting spherical

Thanks fellas! This was a big relief to get these throttle plates done and installed... after spending 2+ months getting 5 throttle barrels made up, I finally feel like this is all going to work out...!

Amazing work! If you feel like moving on to size BB at some point, you may have a customer here.

I like to think that I would make other size variations someday... but gotsta get thru this B first. And it looks like I will be starting another batch of B’s as soon as I prove that these work as intended. The more interest I receive... the more likely it’ll happen

Been having small successes lately... with small parts. Still have a few more pieces to go, but have made throttle bushings, idle bypass plug, int/high speed adjusting needles, idle needle, idle needle seat, bowl to barrel studs, idle stop screw and jam nut, spray bar retaining screws, float level plug, and int/high speed accelerating well plugs.

This is a goofy question, but the major carb mfgrs always touted about how the jets were high precision in not only the through hole and taper but depth. I figured they would run a batch and measure flow (QC) a selection before stamping with the size, in case tooling wear caused variations.
Did you copy good examples or compare flow? Just curious, NOT questioning you abilities after the other stuff shown in this thread!
