Technical Picked up a 283. Has an intake I didn’t recognize

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anthony myrick, Apr 3, 2021.

  1. Just bought this 283 power pack.
Owner knew very little because it was part of a pile of parts he traded for.
Super clean and turns, appears to be “fresh” New freeze plugs. Crank is stamped .020.
Casting number on the block is 59-61.
This intake has no markings and no divorced choke provision.

i believe it is an Edelbrock C4B with all the markings ground off

  3. Believe you’re correct.

  4. I looked closer at the C4B pics on the net and the oil breather tube is on the drivers side.
This one is on the passenger side
So i scrolled down further in the pics and found one. So these thinks we’re cast for each side

look at some more pictures and you will see that there are several versions of the C4B , oil fillers nd thermostats in different locations.

  6. Yep. I just figured that out.
    Thanks for the info.
After using the search function, seems a few different versions were made.
    Cool

  7. That’s a c4b as Belle said. The c3b was the same, they came in different versions. When the oil fill tube switched sides the t-stat location moved. Does that one have a coolant port on the front drivers side?

  8. Yes. Drivers side for the t-stat

  11. Like a port for a nipple. My c3b had one right where the alt bracket needed to be.

casting date would be on the back, generally in the area of the casting number. but it will be a letter and a few numbers, kind of small.

The M suffix makes it a truck engine.

Not a large truck, a smaller truck, 10-30 series.

The date code should be on top of the bellhousing, but not neccessarily right next to the casting number...it could be on the other side, or near the middle of the top of the bellhousing area.

  18. Great score! I love the old, vintage Small Block Chevrolet aftermarket intakes. I realize the newer designs probably offer more power, but the old ones look so cool.

  19. Same here. I have the later versions. I’m planning a “periodish” build. This intake will help.

October 6, 1960 casting. Makes sense for a Nov 4th assembly date, which is stamped on the front of the block.

    Now you know what it's out of....which doesn't matter a bit.... :)

  22. Well I gambled $200 on it.
We’ll see what’s going on when I get it on the engine stand.

    Great manifold for that engine

  26. Pulled the heads. I knew some moisture had got to it but I didn’t know how much. Looks like it sat on its side with a tad bit of moisture.

heads look to have been worked and surfaced. The heads show more signs of rust than the block. Must have been store upside down at one point.
Every thing seems to be coated in white lithium. That stuff is everywhere in it. Almost to the point the cam was hard to spin even with the heads off.
The cam has 112n-151. That should be the old L79 cam?
Lifters are new, cam bearings look new, rods and mains and timing chains set as well
Cam is hard to tell with semi hardened white lithium stick to it.
Pulled 1 main cap and one rod cap. Other than the sticky crap on it, it looks good. The one main plasti-gauged at .0015.
Haven’t measured the bore. The pistons are clean but no markings for oversize.

Yes, should be the L79....with a 283 in a light stick car it'll be ok

  28. Yep. Probably will save that for something else.
If I use this engine in my wife’s 56, it will be an auto.

  29. Years ago I drove a 48 passenger '63 Chevy school bus with a 283 2 barrel in it. Granny gear 4 speed and single speed rear. It was a good running old bus, actually surprised at how well that little 283 did with the bus loaded.

  30. Last summer my son and I built him a 61 c40. (That’s what the kid wanted:D) anyway, we installed a 350 I had. .060, reworked 461 heads and a mild cam. The engine seems kind of a waste in this truck. Could use the 283 with a stockish cam in the c40 and use the 350 in the wife’s 56 wagon. Or, use the 350 in my 57 and the 283 in the 56 and the 261 I have in the 61. This crap gets confusing
