Technical Rear End Identification - HELP

Hey guys I have a 1963 C10. A sbc 350 with a 700R4 was swapped into which I have rebuilt both and moving on to the rearend but I don't know exactly what it is. I want to say its just a common chevy 10 bolt but I have never seen one with a cover like this. It is also a 6 lug as well. Thanks for the help.

 

Doe it also have a drop-out diff head on the other side?
If so , It could be an Eaton HO52 or Eaton HO72

they used that rear from 55-63 in trucks. But some of the 63s had the new 12 bolt truck rear.

 

This seems to be most likely I was trying to see what rearend came in them but I only could find the 12 bolts.

 

I already checked to see if it could be but it doesn't match up.

 

Not an Eaton, as the Eaton has two bolts close together at 9 and 3 o'clock positions.



It appears to be the old early 10 bolt.

 

Do you know if anyone sells any rebuild kits and positrac kits for these old 10 bolts? I don't know if its a 7.5", 8", 8.2", or 8.5" without taking it apart.

 

this is the gasket for the 1963 C10, available on rockauto, although I rotated the picture 90 degrees so it would match the truck.

Looks like the 2 right and left side bolts are closer together, more close to the center of the axle. Optical illusion?

 

HO72 would have 8 lug wheels.

 

This thread has already ID'd the rear end as an Early 10 bolt.

But an HO 52 and HO 72 doesn't always have 8 Lug rear ends [but they are usually floater rear ends]
The HO 72 in my friends 58 Chevy 1ton is 5 lug [floater]

The HO 72 and 52 diff heads are interchangeable [bolt in swap] ,the only difference is early [17] and late [30] axle spline counts.
Also the Eaton Floater Hubs/Drums/ Brakes are a direct bolt on swap with the later model GM 10.5" 14 bolt rear [so the PCD can be changed easily]

I think it might be the picture they are pretty evenly spaced.

 

If you mean the OP's picture, then yes it's an optical illusion. The Eatons had uneven spacing, not his axle.

 

I don't know of anyone who supports the rear axle you have. It is not one of the typical car 10 bolt axles you listed. But then the truck 12 bolt rear axle was unlike the well known car 12 bolt axle either. All you'll find for your axle are gaskets, and wheel bearings really. If I was planning on doing much in the way of upgrades to your truck, the axle would be one of the first things I'd swap out.
I'd consider something completely different, but well supported by aftermarket too. A Ford 8.8", 9", or 12 bolt GM car axle. Plenty of inexpensive 8.8" posi axles, with good ratios that are dirt cheap at wrecking yards.

 

Sure like to see a picture of an HO72 with five luge wheels as well as the casting numbers of the drop in.

 

That's an Eaton HO 33, I have one in my '56 panel.

 

My old '64 had a Dana in it. You could use an axle up to '66 would be a direct bolt in (I think even up to '70).
