50 Merc Man's coupe pretty well nails it. Stick a period correct plate on it and park it in front of the right background and you won't know if the photo was taken sometime between 50/ 53 or today.
My playing with the photo shows why all too many young guys think all cars were black back in the day.

Tried to replicate the mid fifties but just couldn’t leave it in Primer.[IMG][IMG]

  10. This 51 Merc and the next 3 photos are my period correct cars, wouldn't do them any other way. There are some very ugly modern day interpetations of Mercs of the 50's on here , being "different" isn't good when the O/G cars were the best. The 1st one below is my take of the Freddy Rowe style Merc.[IMG]

Try as might I can't take the shine off Mercman@Bulldog's Merc.

Still I'd say that a lot of cars we see in old photos weren't really black nor were they in primer or had flat paint.
I'm liking the fact that outside of repro 37 bumpers everything visible on the cars posted is indeed period correct. Not only in the fact that it was made in a certain time frame but that it was actually used on customs in the time frame that the cars represent.

Working on a Chopped and sectioned 49 Dodge Coronet.
Currently bouncing back and forth between rear end mods and floor and rocker repairs.
Also I modified a 50 Coronet grill as well.

Thanks @Mr48chev. I like my car in B/w or color but as a kid, I worked for .65-80 cents per hour. I started @ 12 with working papers in Western PA. At our McDonalds, a burger, Coke, and Fries was .49 cents. It was one of the first around Baden, Pa. right next to Circus Car Wash. Shine for me was out of the question at my teenage years...couldn’t,even afford an Earl Scheib spray job @$89.95. So...@ 65 years young I decided to have My Merc from my youth built. I did it as true as I could except when it came to the paint, in reality 1966 it would have been Sheffield Green with red oxide primer spots. Those were the days!

  23. Well we stayed as close to how it used to be in 1961/1962. Have not done much lately than dust it and keep the battery charged.

Can't take credit for the build, just want to finish it the way it was intended and enjoy it.
