    Hello,

When we built the first 283 SBC with 6 Strombergs, the finned, smooth, no name valve covers were part of the package. After several months, we rebuilt the whole motor from strictly carbs to a whole new ball game that had to have blower spec speed parts. The good old finned valve covers came along for the ride.

We started in late 1959 and concluded our drag racing with the 671, 292 ci blower spec motor in our 1940 Willys Coupe. I was responsible for adding the Moon Equipment breathers on both valve covers.

    [ upload_2021-3-13_4-50-23.png
The second SBC was the stock orange 327 covers that came with the 1965 El Camino and lasted 125k miles still looking like new.

The final SBC motor was another 327 with the same orange red color and finned aluminum covers with added moon breathers in our 2nd 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery. Those were not the same finned, no name, valve covers, but I liked the look of the original 671 supercharged motor valve covers, so I put on the Moon Aluminum breathers. (I wished we had kept the 292 SBC 671 motor from our Willys Coupe. It would have fit nicely in either of our 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery cars, with much emphasis.)

The finned look, just gave our 283-292-327 SBC motors some extra added zip. They just made each motor stand out a little better. The Moon Equipment Breathers were just part of the package. They could stay or go, but the look was the fins on the nice aluminum valve covers.

What about the orange/red 327 in the El Camino? Those were low funds college days. It was a hard weekend driver, holiday vacation driver, surfboard transportation, desert racing motorcycle holder, and just a fabulous reliable workhorse, without having to spend any money on repairs or rebuilds.

Plus, the El Camino was made just a few miles up the freeway from my apartment and college in San Jose. The Fremont GM factory said my car was built on a Wednesday… that could account for the longevity of the motor without any repairs until 120k.

  3. I would like a set of finned aluminum Corvette covers.
Then I would have irrefutable proof that my small block came out of a Vette!

  4. I Have the same One's as ( oilguy ) has & I think they are Great
When I open my Hood on my Merc. They stand out.

I've had finned Vette covers that l purchased back in the day for $13 from a Chevy dealer. However, they did not have the right bolt pattern for the later model heads that l now have on my 57 Chevy. I also had a set of finned Cal Custom covers with the early bolt pattern. Wish l could find a set to fit my later model heads. Presently l am running later model finned covers found on Camaros. They have the round flag emblem. They are the only thing that is not period correct on my 60s custom.

I bought these M/Ts years ago just because they were cheap and hadn't had the holes knocked out. When I put my Henry J together, I thought They fit the look I was after on my 327. I had been using Cal Custom staggered holes on adapters, and still have them.

We raced a couple of blown alcohol SBC's and those Mickey's really sealed up good. They got my vote.

I like the painted stock covers. I like the engine to be all function and no glitz.....The stock covers with three duces with three little filters looks the best..

These...want to use them, but they don't clear the roller rockers on the ends, IMG_5048 (2).JPG and they weigh a lot.
