I have a 31 roadster that I’m trying to figure out the best gray color to paint it. I’m wanting a vintage gray that I can get a current paint code for.

go to your local automotive paint supply store and look through their books of colors - plus, there are standard color charts, etc - no easy task but, worth the time to get it right

Was just looking at a couple new Rangers for the wife's new daily driver . One was a solid gray no metallic color. Did not do much for the new truck ,but would be a great easy to match option for a traditional hot rod. Just google 2021 Ford Ranger gray to see an example and paint code. Larry

All the current manufacturers are producing solid gray cars today it’s the new “in” color. Last time I remember a solid gray getting popular was for the 62 VW although it was lighter. To me either one would look good on an early Ford especially with red solid pinstriped steel wheels.

Called Anthracite, a great color. Used by Mercedes and Porsche too. I have a '64 Beetle with it.

Go to your local paint store. Ask to look in the "fleet color" book. There will probably be a page of gray colors.

You can search by year and make, lots to choose from most have new PPG codes. I just seen FORTY 6 already posted the site, I almost thought I was going to be of some help:(

I've been seeing a real dark gray color lately on a late model Chrysler, I don't keep up on the models anymore but it gives a sinister look to it.
Found it, called "destroyer gray", yes, it's real dark but read that it changes slightly in various light conditions.
Sorry, can't show a photo of the car, post 65 rules and all.

"Gray is the color of neutrality, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing behind Grey’s practical nature. And that’s what Conquer Grey is all about—a color that exudes quiet calm and confidence without being imposing. Still water runs deep, as they say, so if you consider yourself the silent-but-deadly type, then Conquer Grey is the color for you."

    Hello,
We have been enthralled with the frozen colors on various sporty cars and trucks. My wife said she would like to see the same grey on a hot rod. She is certain that if we ever move to Colorado, Wyoming, or Montana, her choice of station wagons will remain the same, but a new addition will be added to the custom built, tall, garage for the new 4x4 Ford Raptor Truck, painted in a Conquer Grey. We have seen older models with a Satin Finish Grey that is similar to the “frozen” look, but the latest Raptor Grey is a color she now likes.

This photo she took a couple of years ago is the Grey that she liked on an old hot rod. But, the new Grey from Ford is now her favorite. It helps that the latest Raptor is one with the most powerful motor combination of any truck on the market. The new R760 HP for a truck to get out of a mountain road during inclement weather.

Whether we move to the mountains, is another story. A So Cal couple for almost their whole lives is a hard sell to go elsewhere. Our son is rooted here, our granddaughter has selected a So Cal 4 year College to attend in a couple of years, and we just cannot be in any other climate zone. Plus, the family is So Cal oriented, with others in the extended family moving back to So Cal during the pandemic.

So, it is home then and now. But, that color of grey is tempting for her possible "new" truck. The color white and grey are the two colors that look great and take the least amount of effort to keep clean and shiny. They just do not show dirt or road grime, like other colors.
We have had our daily drivers colored white or grey since 1997.

When I painted the Travelall, I wanted the main body to 'be the same color as grey primer'
I recall it is a United Airlines Fleet grey. The fenders are Vulcan grey
Go look at the paint charts at the automotive paint supply house

A good name for this thread would have been "50 Shades of Gray"

1935/36 Fords had many gray shades, Lt. gunmetal gray, Benton gray, Benton gray metallic, Cordoba tan etc. If you can get your hands on 35/36 book that will help, lots of excellent original Ford shades over many years, Good Luck.
