Art & Inspiration Was there a Hamb era car on a TV series that made a lasting impression on you?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Mar 9, 2021.

  1. With Duke Power having a huge bucket truck cutting around power lines parked in my driveway blocking my exit I turned on the TV and for the first time in years I saw Highway Patrol and the '55 Buick driven by Broderick Crawford.

I remember watching that television with my parents and how my dad said he would like to have a car like that, watching a episode this morning I remembered how cool that car was, the dog dish hubcaps, it sit right and was a two door car.

I realize there have been lot's of cool cars & trucks in Television series but have any of them made a impression on you? HRP

  2. Lumpy's (Leave it to Beaver) '40 Convertible wasn't the only reason I wanted one, but I'm sure contributed in a way.

That's the one. I used to watch each episode to see if they would show more of the car.

Late 1940s an early 50s,I was building model cars, cutting them up more each time, custom n hot rods.
The mid 50s having ideas n plans about building a real hotrod, the models started taking on more real looks. So had kind of hit on a style, I liked best.
A long comes Norm's cool "T" on the cover of Car Craft, then on TV's 77 Sunset Strip,,it had most all the things I liked.
I had found a old beat up 28A,crashed in the rear trunk, roadster in late 55,made it a running hot rod by 1959.
Later on,lots of race cars, but still have my 28.
It's not that hard to see some "lasting impression" from Norm's "T"* in my bobtailed "A"* even in the fog early AM. Plus a lot of things I did too my models.

Route 66, the first year episodes with the straight axle Vette, and the Bearcats, I loved the recreated Stutz Bearcat. I believe it was a Barris creation, with of all things a Chevy 250 6 and auto trans, at least that's what I remember from an aticle bout it/them in some magazine. Hey I was in HS and there was stuff to do at night, and I don't mean homework...

A very young hotrodjack would be glued to the Mickey Mouse Club, hoping to see the Hot Rod Roadster on the "Spin & Marty" series.
I was SO young that I didn't even appreciate that Annette had boobs (that came later).;)

Not really "HAMB era", but the movie that got me interested in old cars was Cobra.

I second the Walton's truck. It was the star of the show!

I remember on "My Three Sons" one of the boys was blowing off some ugly girl until he found out that she owned a Willy's coupe, in racing form.

Cool episode. The story line was the guy driving the roadster was paid by the bad guy to build a car that the cop's couldn't catch. And they used that car to commit a few stick ups.

There was the '61 Plymouth cop car on "Car 54,Where Are You?". Saw it on the cover of a Dell comic based on the series. It was PINK. Apparently, since the show was shot in black and white, pink showed up as the same shade of gray on the TV set as the real cop cars in New York. By painting the car pink, the locals knew enough to stay clear of the film crew.

Me being an Olds engine nut I enjoy Highway Patrol episode 71 featuring a black channeled Ford roadster, Olds powered with two 2 barrel carbs, a fine example of an early 50's hot rod just like in old Hot Rod mags. In some episodes a patrol car was a Buick Century 2dr post, not a hdtp. The only Century 2dr post I have ever seen.. Was this rare or not? Greg

  30. there was not much HAMB friendly stuff on TV or cartoon shows I can recall growing up in the mid 90's early 2000's. There was either a 2nd Disney Channel or a time slot where they would play old cartoons and there was this old Disney cartoon that I just loved to watch, especially at the end when it gets hot rodded with the wide whites and had the fenders pulled off. Plus it really got me hooked on tracking down cars histories. I have done it with every old car we drag into the shop. I like figuring out what kind of life the car has led and I blame alot that on this cartoon.
