  1. I just ordered a new Duralast aluminum water pump for my old sedan and I noticed there is no mention of a gasket, It's been a very long time since I have replaced a water pump and I am not sure if there will be one in the box when it arrives, I could call Summit and wait for another half hour to be connected to the guy that has all the answers but I'll ask you guys, if it doesn't come with a gasket is it advisable just to use Permatex ultra RTV multi purpose sealer instead of a gasket or would it be best to use a gasket designed for the water pump and the Permatex? HRP

  2. Yes, should come with the gasket.
I use Permatex #2 with the gasket.
People will chime in with their favorite sealers I'm sure..kind of like brands of spark plugs or oil.

If it doesn't come with gaskets, I personally would still use some. Do you eat Cheerios? Their boxes make perfectly fine gaskets.....just trim to fit. :D

You don’t say for what but I bought a small package of different gasket material from O’Reilly’s, Auto Zone, Trace Amigos de la Pep, etc and used a small ball peen hammer to trace the outline and holes then cut with scissors. I have set of hole punches too. For the 3/8” holes and bolts I use the 5/16” hole punch so it will hold the gasket with the threads on the bolt. I too like Permatex #2 on all water gaskets and threaded fittings.
PS: Cheerios boxes have been my go to when I don’t have gasket material which is better.

C'mon Danny, you already know the answer:D Even a homemade gasket will be better than no gasket at all;)

I think I would be concerned about the quality of the water pump! o_O

I mean the gasket only holds the water in. No real need for one

I used phone book covers years back, they were better paper then Tony The Tiger box,but Tony box works too. Is the 3 in+ thick phone book showing my age? Miami had thick books.

From what I went through a while back with some of the Duralast products you may need a zipper instead of a gasket as it may take at least two or three until you get one that works, doesn't leak or has all the parts with it.

Aluminum lawnmower engines don't use side cover gaskets anymore, thin bead of RTV and slam together. Use perm #1, that will stick it!

Most water pumps come with a gasket...especially if it's a pump that uses a normal paper gasket.

Only about half the time, is the gasket destroyed during shipping.

If you need, you can get one from a local parts store, or make one from a Cheerios box and some scissors.

Aviation or #2 Permatex, not RTV.

I’ve bought some pumps that the gaskets are sold separately, heck, used to be when you bought a thermostat there would be a gasket in the box, the last two I’ve bought I had to buy them separately.

Don't believe I've ever used a water pump that didn't come with gaskets. If by chance it doesn't, you can pick some up at one of the chain stores for a couple bucks.

Maybe that's why we usually buy water pumps locally, so we can peek in the box and see what we're getting. And give them the core back, after the new one is in and working and not leaking.

although I can understand that this is getting harder to do.

Couldn't use the phone book cover where I lived when I was a kid. It only had 4 pages including the front and back cover. Of course, not everybody in beautiful downtown Mustang, OK ( population 500 or less ) had a phone or we might have had to have 5 pages. Wheaties box and Permatex 2 worked for me.

  28. Jim, I normally do buy what I need at the local NAPA but I was ordering some other parts that I cant get at the local parts house, thus I ordered online.

Also, I consider your advise something that I need to follow, can you expand on the aviation or #2 Permatex? HRP

27 post and no one has asked if a cheerios box for a gasket is traditional. Must be a slow day.
