Projects 1949 Shoebox Ranchero Build

No. This is it. Sealer is basically the same As 2K primer. It won’t see extended rain, sun, or weather so it should be fine. Technically it could get sanded and top coated, but when it’s time it’ll get sanded and sealed with reduced epoxy primer and top coated.

 

Just concerned hid want all that hard work to have rust pop up. Older primer would get pours and rust would creep in but if you put sealer on it wold make it water proof. I haven’t messed with primers since 2010 and I know this stuff changes almost yearly. I have done paint and body work for 65 years and seen a lot of changes.Frank

 

After unmasking and cleaning up today I went up to the shop attic to get my interior garnish mouldings to cut and fit. I spied my stash of “C” chrome mouldings and had an ah-hah moment. So I brought one down and cut, shaped and mounted a new hood moulding. Much cleaner looking than the original rough one I have and I don’t care for the original ornament.

 

Looks like it belongs there.

Very well done. I do not care for the original hood ornament so I have replaced mine with a chrome "Winged Goddess". The holes were there and she looks better IMO.

I can agree with you about enjoying your Custom Build in primer this summer. Hopefully your plan stays on track better than a similar plan I had in the early 90's when I designed and built a Custom 37 Chevy Kingcab Pickup. Having my truck in primer allowed me to handle any further modifications or bodywork concerns.
I logged a ton of miles and replaced the engine over the next 15 plus years. The truck was still in primer when I finally sold it.
Fast forward to today. My adult Son in Michigan bought the truck from the second owner a few years ago and has been enjoying it with his Family.
Long story short, it has been over 25 years since the original build and the 37 Pickup is still running around in its original red oxide primer.

 

Looks like its coming together nicely....I really like the clean simple look, factory original.

Chrome won’t get you home, but it sure gets me excited. After getting my garnish mouldings all fit and welded up and some dash holes welded up I decided to put the grill surround in.

 

Oh man, I like that one. If mine had looked like that I'd be driving it now.

 

Do you have a plan for windshield wipers? I went with S.P.D. unit and glad I installed it before my Dash was in. I now have wiper delay and 3 speeds. If I were to install the Bug on the hood I could have washer fluid but didn't go that far. The kool part for me is there big control switch mounted in my 51 stock hole and I used my Stock 51 knob.

 

I forgot to mention I also used my Stock bezels. Nothing looks changed to the eye.

 

One of these days soon I’ll dig out the original vacuum unit and see if it works. If it works I’ll live with that and RainX. I’ve driven in some hellacious rain storms in my old cars. Some with good wipers and some not so good. RainX is often better than having the wipers on. Time will tell.

This car is amazing. You nailed the look as if Henry made it back in the day. The proportions are just about perfect. Now drive the wheels off it and get it painted!

 

Sure has come a long way since the beginning. Your hard work has paid off big time.

Time for an update...got the windshield in and wipers working and shortened the arms. Yes...I know it’s vee-butt...that’s the way I want it!

Then I spent a few days figuring out some lifter noice in the motor. Finally tore down the top end, replaced two lifters. Now it’s quiet and runs great.

Did some fabrication for the headliner and got the bows fit. Made a mount for an interior light. Then got the door jambs all smoothed out, primed and sanded.

This morning I painted the door jambs. So that’s the final color. It’s a 1971 Ford truck gray.

Time for the interior.

Another couple of hours and you'd have the exterior painted. You keep working and it will be finished before anybody sees it on the street. Congrats on the progress.

Lee Valley Tools used to sell a garbage can lid that you combined with a regular shop vac - hose from garbage can to shop vac and from tool to garbage can - idea was the air swirled around in the garbage can lid and dropped most of the dust in the can before going out through the shop vac filter, giving the shop vac that much more capacity. Worked okay for woodworking shop, might for sanding dust too.
