Hot Rods 303 Olds clutch problem

I have a 303 motor ,aluminum flywheel and Muncie 4speed. Cutch was for a cad lasalle trans .the clutch is large Ford ( early Ford style) I would like to use a hydraulic throw out bearing but the one that fits the Muncie isn’t big enough dia. To work! Suggestions other than re-drilling flywheel would be welcome.

 

Make a ring ( washer ) 3/8 thick may be thicker (1/4) to go from throw out bearing size to Pressure plate finger / lever,.. sometimes you have to think outside the box & experiment!!

 

Or redrill the flywheel and use a GM pressure plate.

 

it's aluminum and not re-drillable.GM pressure plate different bolt pattern so solution I assume is going to be in the throw out bearing. On the washer it's a wear area so I don't think it would survive. Hate to get a new flywheel but I might have to

 

Why is it not re drillable? Is it too thin where the chev pressure plate holes need to be? I have redrilled aluminum flywheels but never a 303... picture of the engine side of the flywheel?

 

A hardened washer should work

 

You could look for a hydraulic throw out bearing that is large enough to fit the Long type fingers, Then see about adapting it to the setup you have. When I had the same deal without the hydraulic deal I had to make a brass bushing and press it into the bearing to make it fit the collar shaft.

 

I won’t use another hydraulic throw out like those. I’ve had Nothing but problems with that style. I’d do like @Moriarity said and use a early for fork and throw out bearing hooked up to a slave cylinder. When the hydraulics need work for the clutch, you don’t have to mess with pulling the trans or motor out.

 

Above is the way to go. I had a 32 5W I put a 55 Olds engine in, 11" ford pressure plate with a 10 1/2" disc mated to a 39 trans and used a hyd slave cyl. No problems. P/Plate bolted right up to the Olds std shift flywheel. All info obtained from the "little" books back in 1961.

Liston to Moriarity & Nailhead Jason. Outside hyd. cyl is more trouble free, simple to repair or replace. Greg

 

My reply was why the fly wheel could not be redrilled.
Do you have insight on that ? The PP looks to sit way outside on the edges, so maybe no meat there?

Thanks for all the replies. This car is the last to use up some of what is still sitting around that I didn’t have the heart to sell off. Car is a fiberglass cobra body Ford dropped axle 471 blown 303 olds Muncie 4 speed and quick change rear. Only problem so far has been the clutch. Motor has a really nice aluminum flywheel and I sold off the stock flywheel . Using a slave cylinder is going to make the most sense but take up some room. Thanks for input now on the hunt for a flywheel.

You might consider one of the many clutch cables available ..

 

Don't know if you ever got the answer you need, but I saw this in an old (1971) book I had.
