Just wanted to set the record straight about the "wonderfull" Dodge Hemi. i had a '53 Ford Mainline with a completely stock 1951 Merc flathead, 3-speed stick. Neighbor kid had a 53 Dodge with the stock I think 241 Hemi and 3-speed stick. I could always pull him off the line, but when the Merc was out of breath in low and I was shifting to 2nd, the Dodge would pull ahead so my front bumper was at his door. and thats the way the race usually ended. Like the Ford 292 vs the chevy 283, stock off the showroom cars were very close to each other in performance. i loved to drag race.

Not hemi related, but when i was in High School, (200 hundred years ago) i had a '55 Chevy 283 w/ 4 barrel and my buddy had a '40 Coupe with flathead 2x2, and headers. We would "race",sometimes he beat me, sometimes i beat him. Those were the days.

So, just so I'm up to speed, you're still bugged by being pulled by your buddy's mom's car in a street race 60 years ago? Man, I wish that was my biggest worry right now! :p

    I'd guess when people go nuts over a Hemi (It's A Hemi!) it isn't a 1953 241.

Depending on the model, the Dodge was probably 15%-20% heavier than the Ford. That should make the O/P even more cranky about the bitter defeat.

Sometimes, it's more the driveline than the engine. I had a buddy that bought a new '66 Corvette L79 (350 HP 327) coupe with a wide ratio 4 speed and 3.08 rear gears. The next year, I bought a new '67 Corvette L79 coupe with the same transmission, but 3.70 gears. When it came to drag racing, there was no comparison (note : he also got beat on a regular basis by a guy with a 300 HP 327 in an Impala coupe with Powerglide). I'm sure there is a road somewhere that was long enough for him to come sailing by me, but it wasn't near our town.

I had another friend who changed the Ford-a-matic out of his '53 for a regular 3 speed, but left the Ford-a-matic gears in the rear end. He could never understand why it was such a slug compared to my OD equipped '51. (I told him it was the Mallory dual point conversion with the fancy brass condenser that did it.)

Speaking of old Dodge hemi's, about that same time, I had a "T" bucket with a 4 BBL 270 out of a wrecked '55 Dodge. That car had a Dodge 3 speed and 4.30 gears out of a Plymouth station wagon. Not much of a top end, but that car could really accelerate, especially with the Ellingson recapped slicks on it. Actually, first gear was good for nothing but smokin' them hard old slicks.:D

Blondes are the SBC of the fairer sex. Brunettes make me think of nail heads, caddies and Y blocks. Red heads on the other hand, at least the ones I have carnal knowledge of, were always a bit on the crazy side. You know, hard to handle, thrill ride. Definitely more of a hot Hemi!

I like anything that compresses a fuel/air mixture and then ignites it.

Do you believe any Flathead in the history of the world stick with this thing?

You know, in the history of the world Rick Schnell's flathead powered dragster would probably beat that thing. Rick's best time to date is 7.695 seconds in the quarter mile at Brainerd Dragway.

Yep I think the slam and channel will make it stupid slow.

To make your point should post a pic of one that is less show and more go looking.

So what does it run in the quarter?

BB- That is a very generous and understated estimate. I'd go with usually crazier than a shit house rat.

Maybe we could put that Hemi in a school bus and put the Flathead in a T Bucket

Oh, I didn't say that I did not prefer them. It's more of a warning to the uninitiated or the slow learners. My old friend said it was like "slamming your hand in a truck door 'cause it felt good when you stopped.?
