So I bought a 40 Ford Woody last summer that was missing the dash. Unbeknownst to me I purchased a dash for it not knowing that the woody and convertible use a slightly different dash than the coupe/sedan. My question is, what are the differences between the two style dashes? I would like to find out if the dash I have is actually for a woody/convertible. The angles in pics online are tricking me and it’s hard to make out any differences. Thanks in advance.
I'm not much help, but the pointy "horns" on the upper corners of the dash are different on the Woodie/Convert dash. I'll try to take a picture for you, but my Convertible is currently snowed in. Someone on Ford Barn will know, if you post there.
Thanks for the pics. Man, mine looks a lot like yours but it’s so hard to tell from a picture. I’m assuming the coupe/sedan dash has a more rounded ear on the corner versus the point that ours has.
Again, I’m assuming but it looks like the coupe/sedan dash has a more subtle corner that isn’t as pointy as my dash.
Let me know if you need any measurements and I can measure tomorrow. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I just received Mike Kubarth's new "everything you ever wanted to know about the 1940 Ford" book available from the Early V8 Club. According to his photos and description (higher corners and top pull ashtrays) your dashboard is from a convertible produced after Jan. 1940 Great book, by the way...........
That looks like a closed car dash you have, it appears the ears stick out a bit more, but it's very hard to tell from a picture. I've had them laying on top of each other and even then it's subtle.
The woody has been sold, and I want to list this dash for sale. I don’t want to misrepresent this when I list it.
This may not be relevant, since you’re talking 40 model, but on a 39, if you’re looking straight on at the dash, the ends taper up at the bottom from about 8-10” inboard to the outer edge. The area around the 39 gauges is noticeably different between the closed car and open car as is the glove box door. In your case, the 40 glove box doors look the same in the pictures, but it could be shaped differently from the gauges/glovebox out. I would measure the height at the outermost edge of the dash and compare it to a known Conv/woody dash. You can see the difference on the 39 in the pics I have posted. I’m repairing the gauge area of my Conv dash with a donor panel from a closed car.
Maybe these pictures will help. The purple dash is from a Convertible and the brown one is from a Sedan.
