Technical Spin on adapter identification

    Hey all,
    Got another question: what type of spin on adapter is pictured below? Getting my ‘66 327 block ready for the machine shop and this is the only thing I can’t figure out. My inclination is to pull the bolts and get a rod into the threaded filter boss and pry, but I don’t want to ruin anything.

    Spin on oil filter adaptor. Should pop off after removing the two bolts.

    Yep, standard spin on SBC adapter.

    That’s what I thought, but I remove the bolts and it seems stuck. Like, really stuck. Ran a razor blade around the gap outside and flushed it out with carb cleaner and no change.

    This is why I was considering the prying.

    I believe there is just a gasket under the adaptor. It may have some gasket cement on it holding it tight.

    Second question is “would you save and re-use?” These don’t degrade over time I would think?

    Try giving it a good tap with a dead blow hammer
    And as far as wear ? How ?
    Maybe the threads where the filter spins on can get damaged by hamb fisted oil change kids but simply wearing out? Naw.

    and Raoul , where, where you when the drugs took hold ?

    Remove the bolts and put a little heat from a propane torch to the perimeter of the adapter. That will soften up any gasket glue which might have a firm grip on the adapter. There appears to be a slight gap between the adapter and the edge of the engine block where you could stick a small flat blade screwdriver in and twist to see if that will pop it loose. If it is flush, tap the sharp edge of a knife blade between the adapter and the engine block.

    Take out the bolts holding it to the block, then screw on a filter, gently tap on the filter the added leverage should help

    It is stuck in the grove where the original canister would seal on a square cut o ring is

    I had the same issue recently with a 1965 built block. I put the rubber covered handle end of a 1/2 ratchet down the center of the adapter and gently worked it back and forth and it popped out. If you break the adapter, you aren't out much. I got a replacement from TransAdapt just so I would have a clean one for reassembly.

    Some of those adapters used ford oil filters.

    I think it's the "better made" of the adapter's out there. Most likely takes the Ford application filter with a built in pressure relief valve. That feature goes with the stock, canister, locating plate. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
