Or like most of us who wanted the blackwalls, they simply had the tires re-mounted with black side out. No need to replace the tires.
When one purchased new tires in those days, the shop usually asked which side you wanted on the outside. No big mystery. If you can afford 5 figures for a MkII, you can have it just as you like it.
