When I was a kid, late 70’s early 80’s I used to stop by the DX gas station on the way to school and they had cardboard racks with cheap sunglasses. They were like $2. I was hard on them, so I was buying a set every week.

They were basic wayfarer style frames with different colored lenses. You could get green, blue, black, yellow etc.

One of my old ZZ Top concert T’s even had the green lens frames on the cartoon drawing.

I know, I am rambling. I wish I could find these again. I search eBay but quickly grow tired of everything but what I am looking for.

Back in the sixty's I had a pair that had a visor on them. Black frames with a couple of red stripes on the visor part. I believe I got them from Ca. through an add in R&C mag. No idea of what ever happened to them.

I’m usually pretty savvy at finding oddball stuff for sale on the net. But you’re right, I can’t find anything like what you’re describing.

I knew Mark would get it. That's still not the brand. These are Ray Bans but the basic shape. [IMG]

yeah, those are just the ones that I have here. I was at the Greenfield Iowa swap meet back in the late 80's and a guy was vending there out of an enclosed uhaul trailer. It was full to the top with the Wilsonite and Space vue sunglass store displays. 5 bucks each. I only bought 1 of each....

I don't know why they made such an impact on me. I guess it takes me back to my happy place, pre COVID and pre-crazies.

The Wilsonites are cool. Similar to the stand I was talking about.

Last time I saw them they were in a desk drawer of a desk that I had made in high school shop class. Still have the desk, but the sun glasses have gone who knows where. Maybe my old man threw them away when he got rid of all my baseball cards, albums, ect.

That’s what I had in mind from your description in the OP. I couldn’t find any for sale. The ones on eBay that Moriarity posted are more rounded. They look like chick glasses to me.
“Back in the day” I had a prescription pair just like the pair you posted, made to wear for riding the Harley. I wanted sunglasses for the daytime riding, but I’m 1/2 blind with nonprescription glasses. :)

  15. Interesting thread. The Willson Co. is a maker of welding goggles so I guess it wouldn't have been a stretch for them to make sunglasses. As for the type Roothawg is referring to,I remember buying them as a kid in the 1950's and striping the earpieces.Could be a real challenge as they were pretty thin. Don't recall who made them, but some of them may have been Foster-Grant's.

Always worn Ray Ban Wayfarers and absolutely love them. Have always been pricey....but getting ridiculous nowadays.

Not Wayfarer style but since Willson was mentioned.....here's a pretty cool set.

The old wayfarer style had the lenses like the Wilsons. That color of green. The blue was the same transparency, but blue.

I guess I'm a snob. When it comes to sunglasses there's only one that matters:
    Wayfarer.

I hear the name and I flash to Don Henley singing:

"I can see you, your brown skin shining in the sun. You've got your
hair pulled back and Wayfarers on..."

I'm WAY too hard on sunglasses. Mine are more like Wayscratchers... I struggle to pay $10. The ones I am talking about used to be $2. I averaged a pair or 2 per week.
