I always wondered how well the pushrods would hold up. I have wanted to hear one of his hemis run since gawd knows when. he was more than an innovator, he get something in his head and was not afraid to try it.

I have often wondered about those pushrods also. The main problem I can see would most likely be getting enough oil to those center ball sockets, F.E Fords did not have much oil to the top end anyway.

The main reason the idea died was fords in house far superior cammer - thats when mickey went to pontiac with essentially the same castings

Mickey Thompson built a lot of different 'stuff' but a lot also never got much beyond the prototype stage either, as shown by its rarity. The aftermarket industry from those days forward is littered with conversion/exotic cylinder heads that never quite delivered on their promises and became mostly known as curiosities. The one guy who had some success in that era was Dan Gurney whose Gurney-Weslake heads actually made it onto some competitive racecars, including the LeMans-winning '68-69 Ford GT40s. Probably the first to build and successfully market a 'better' OHV aftermarket head that wasn't just a 'improved replacement'.

Thompson was hot rodding's Thomas Edison.... But Nikola Tesla won the electrical war.

I'm pretty sure there is one of these engines in Speedway Motors Museum in Lincoln NE. They also had a Pontiac with the Mickey Thompson Hemi heads.

How can I go about ordering the hemi head kit for a 389 Pontiac GP I have. Is there a phone number I can call?

 

Ah, the stuff that gets posted lol... FE Fords tend to have TOO MUCH oil to the top end, not too little. Pretty standard to restrict oil to the top on a high RPM engine- Ford even put out a directive recommending adding a quart to the 428CJ engines, as the valve covers would fill up with oil and run the sump low when revved up.
