Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jenkins Competition, Jan 18, 2021.

  1. Post up any video of that
    classic “I’m Ready” sound.

Found this as an original 409/409 for sale.

I was 5 years old for most of 1962. There needs to be a tremendous smell of ethyl gasoline AND freshly cut lawn grass AND that car idling and life would be perfect.

Sorry, but that isn't any "classic" sound at all, it's that crappy Flowmaster chambered muffler sound, and it sounds like crap. If you're gonna run those mufflers you might as well go all the way and put some 20" wheels and rubber band tires on it too.

It's hard to find videos of HAMB friendly cars with turbo mufflers, here's a 65 GTO, not the best video, but at least it shows the contrast to the gawd awful video in the OP

And then there's the sound of Porter glass packs or steel packs.

Congrats on your new ride. I photographed that car at the Walden Hot Rods Shop open house early last year. I think the guys that took over the So Cal shop built that bad boy. I can send you the pics if you're interested in them.

    BTW, it sounds GREAT!

I just want to get back to the original subject. The 62 409 bubbletop.
That is one of my bucket list rides. I lusted over that car as a kid and I had a 62 Impala SS hardtop with a sbc and powerglide. NOT THE SAME!!!!
    I sold that one quickly.
If it had a dual quad 409 with a 4sp I would still have it.
I love the car, just beautiful in all aspects.
I do agree about the flowmasters. Put some cherry bombs on it and it would be perfect in every way. Love it!!!

  27. IMearsO, The 409 sounds
    exactly like every cammed up
    GTO, SS
and Impala from the 60’s with
    headers and STOCK mufflers.
    An unmistakable tinny or metallic
    but well muffled sound that
    announced “I’m bad” !

I agree, it does sound like Flowmasters to me or does it have an X pipe. When I bought my el Camino, it had an X pipe on it, I couldn't get that thing off fast enough. I ended up pulling the whole exhaust running two 2-1/2" runs with a pair of #17749 Dynomax Turbo mufflers. When I started it, that great Chevrolet big block sound was back..

The Dynomax 17749 is one heavy little muffler.
I like to coat the inside of the muffler with transmission fluid. Really let it soak into the matting then flip it over and get the other side. Once you install them, let them car run for a good 1/2 hour. It will smoke for awhile but once its all finished smoking, it will sound so nice. It will get better and better with more use. Then one day you'll be driving along and notice how great you car sounds. They will sound so nice! They will have a nice low rumble at idle that gear heads will notice. When you drop the hammer, it will sound real healthy..

But its real hard to get the full sound over the internet. That is one beautiful car..

The 409 has a great thumping idle, the engine sounds healthy, but the mufflers sound nowhere near the stock mufflers, it has the distinctive metallic rattling and hollow echo chamber sound of Flowmaster chambered mufflers that you hear at every car event. I hate that sound with a passion (you probably couldn't tell :D). I gave several examples of how a proper muffler for that era of car sounds. A muffler should remove the high end frequencies out of the tone and leave just the mellow low end sound waves, and offer little restriction to flow in the process. Turbo mufflers and glass/steel packs give you exactly that. Hell, even the straight through Magnaflow mufflers will give you that, they are basically a glorified glass pack. Swap the turbo's from that Chevelle over to the Impala and it would sound righteous. Those Flowmasters need to go...
