Art & Inspiration What was the most one year change from cool to ugly?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ct1932ford, Jan 16, 2021.

  1. I would say the 1940 Ford went from a great look to 1941 Ford not such a great look! Sorry for all you 41 owners. JMO What others made a one year jump to ugly?

'56 to '57 Ford PU's, change was just too drastic. I don't mind the '57+ now.

That said, the '58 sold better...
(No offense intended to any '58 lovers. Late buddy of mine had one and loved it.)

  11. I would say in general I think the change from 1957 to 1958 was the ugliest transition for almost every brand.

1960 Fords are possibly my favourite Fords.

I agree with the '40 to '41 anything. And '61 was just plain ugly for everything.

  14. I remember a time when most hot rodders considered the '37 Ford a ugly duckling and i was a card holding member back in the early 70's when they set up like a 4 wheel drive truck with wide tires hanging outside the fenders.

Then the styles changed and guys started lowering them and stuffing the tires under the fenders and my preconception changed, I personally think they are great looking cars when built right.

I think a lot of cars that were overlooked for years have become more popular as the more desirable models have dried up or gotten too rich for many of us.

I also recall a time when the '52-'54 Fords were the red headed stepchildren in the Ford line up and I think sites like this have helped popularize these models and in turn the aftermarket suppliers have taken notice, when I joined the Hamb I was starting to restore our '54 Ranch Wagon and parts were few and far between, now 18 years later a lot of parts are being reproduced, EMS has been a leader in making the new sheet metal replacement parts.

I know I kinda got sidetracked but in the last 20 years I have seen a lot of what I had considered ugly cars being built and with attention to detail I have been proved wrong. HRP

the '49-'51 & '55 and up have always had a huge following.

  16. Personally I like 41-48 Fords better than the 39/40 Ford same with the square bird to the baby bird.

I also like 36-48 Chevrolets better than 36-48 Fords.

How about the changes from '57 to '58 in the Lincolns & Continentals? Went from Automobiles to Railroad Boxcars, just like the changes from '57 to '58 in the T-birds! Although the "Square-birds" have grown on me, their '58 - '60 Lincoln/Continental "kinfolk" never have!

60 - 61 Ford full size. I dig the sleek 60, the 61 is a throwback to 1957 but not as well done as the 57 Ford. The 60 model didn't sell, some said because it was too sophisticated for a low price car so they went back to the tried and true. The 61 was a face lift of the 60 body and such face lifts often aren't as nice as the original but this one is really bad.

I like the boxcar 1959 Continental Mark IV from the movie From Dusk Till Dawn: Texas Blood Money. The movie not so much...

  27. Well, this thread's bound to piss people off!
Not ugly in my opinion, but the Falcon Ranchero is less pretty than the full size.

When I read the title I thought 40 to 41! I’m not the only one.

No hate here, but I agree that calling certain cars "ugly" comes across as mean and arbitrary. I think it would be better to consider this thread in terms of which one-year transition was the most jarring, to our modern eyes.

For the record, I have always had a soft spot for "unusual" cars that many consider ugly. The '63 corvair I drove in college springs to mind. As does the '58 Chevy Impala; almost bought one at the Portland Swap meet years ago, still think of it. :D
