I gave Ernie an award at our car show for being the oldest pilot in the world and still flying. We had him fly above our show that day. He was 98 at the time. He is now 102. But quit flying at 99.
Lou Lazzaro, his number 4, and German Shepherds named "Blackie" mainstays of Fonda speedway until his passing in 2000.
Robert thanks. You have any pictures of Chet Hames ? Lived is Saratoga Springs, Head Starter at Fonda for years ? Stretch
He was inducted in the Fonda Hall of Fame in 2019. I am too young to have seen him flag (39 years old) but me dad has told me about his showmanship. There was just a 8mm video of Fonda in the 1950s posted to the one of the Fonda speedway memories FaceBook pages of. From the Catamount Speedwayweb site At Fonda Fonda
Not a good picture but one of my Dad racing past the flagman. Back in the day when they stood on the track to flag a race. Often gave the green to start the race standing in the middle of the track with the cars going by on each side of them.
