  1. I like turning a piece of junk into a sharp car, but if I'm not gonna get paid i might as well work on my car lmao!

  2. My first paint job was $100 plus materials.
    50 Ford truck. I was 17.
    Owner sanded it.
Glazing putty over rust holes. Newspaper masking with cheap household tape
Had to hold a flashlight with the paint gun cause the guy only had one light in the shop
    Single stage Western metallic.
    Looked awful
Guy loved it cause I gave him exactly what he wanted.
The 15k plus paint jobs, 6 and 7 figure restos and customs and high end wrecks The same thing happened.
Customer was happy cause we did what was expected.

The guy with the ugly 50 Ford with his cheepo paint loved that truck. He drove it.
The last nice car I built sits in a garage.

    all this crap is relative.

My buddy wanted to paint his truck, got some white paint for water towers and industrial equipment, sprayed it with a little hardner, looked great, even years later after sitting in the HOT Texas sun for years. Why is automotive paint so FREEKIN high?

  6. It’s petroleum based products. (Most)
There are a lot of great low cost products.
The top of the line base coats are for matching OEM colors. A lot of time is spent working for the best formulations of colors.
The name brand stuff sponsors race teams, and finances a ton of equipment for body shops.
I’ve seen paint companies buy bass boats, pay for fishing and hunting trips to get shops to buy their products. Unfortunately, most shop owners don’t realize this ‘free’ stuff is paid for with every product they purchase.
Don’t forget the paint reps and car shows like SEMA, goodguys, power tour.......

The people who put out sub par work are going to be busy. The people who put out average types of work are going to be busy. People who put out professional work are going to be busy. In the end, what kind of work do you want to do.

  9. That's not the real problem. It's the shops doing sub par and average work charging for professional work that's the real problem. It's been my experience that the more they charge, the more bullshit I gotta listen to. Over the years I've informed many of these so-called 'professional' shops that I don't pay extra for their bullshit. Quality work done at fair prices never needs bullshit excuses.

Time to stop hijacking this thread which is supposed to be about the build of a 57 Nomad, not all this other BS!
