    Hello,

Growing up near a local dragstrip tends to get under a little kid’s thoughts. Every time we were playing on the junior high school baseball/football field, we always heard the drag racing just on the other side of the railroad tracks, berm. We could not see the race cars making the loud noise, but we certainly could hear them.

From listening to the race cars, to sitting on the berm watching and then walking across the farmer’s field to get an up close viewing of the race cars on the dragstrip and going back to the pits on the return road was so much fun.

By the time I was taking 16mm color movies, we had our favorites. Most of them were from our local Long Beach area and they were the top racers of the times.

Here is one of the best, if not the most innovative race cars, ever. The Sidewinder from Paul Nicolini and built by Joe Mailliard’s Shop in the Westside of Long Beach.

Much to my surprise, when I was part of the first grand opening of the 2017 Lion’s Dragstrip Museum, my films were playing inside and out in the back parking area, there were the racers with their creations from old to new. The NEW/OLD Sidewinder was one of those showcase race cars.

I just love it when someone takes the time like this guy did to make a car fit the era. I have looked this pic over good and can't find anything that would make this car look out of the 1960's. If course everything don't show in pics but as far as one can see from the pic it's era correct. Someone even went to the trouble to take the big white letters off the rear tires that wouldn't have been there then but is the first thing ones sees even from the bleachers.
Thanks for the effort to preserve history.

Look closely at the six point cage in the cockpit. These cages were not generally used in the 60s. Most likely back then there was a roll bar braced with one or two diags to make it legal, much like my first roadster pictured. It looks like someone has decided to upgrade some of the safety equipment to actually be allowed to take the car down the strip today at a sanctioned race track.
Not a problem, as far as I'm concerned.

You're right the cage could be a little modern but I'm with you it's for safety and done with nice taste so it's good. Could pass for a late 60's early 70's cage.
