Back in the Day” – Arnie Knepper captured the 50-lap USAC midget headliner at Chicagoland’s Santa Fe Speedway on Friday night, June 21, 1968. Hailing from Belleville, Ill., Knepper wheeled his Joe Martinez-wrenched, Williams Studio-sponsored, Offenhauser-powered No. 31 to the victory. It's always strange what combinations show up at the race track. Take the October 12, 1952, AAA Stock Car race at the Pomona Fairgrounds for example. Who would think of entering a '52 Nash Ambassador in a stock car race with hot shoe driver Johnny Mantz? The barge weighed in around 3,400 lbs and was powered by a 252.6” inline 6 and had a whopping 120 hp. Mix it all up with car owner J.C. Agajanian and you've got an interesting combo. Luck wasn't with the boys this day, as Mantz finished way down in 10th spot.
