Back in the Day” – Arnie Knepper captured the 50-lap USAC midget headliner at Chicagoland’s Santa Fe Speedway on Friday night, June 21, 1968. Hailing from Belleville, Ill., Knepper wheeled his Joe Martinez-wrenched, Williams Studio-sponsored, Offenhauser-powered No. 31 to the victory. Vince Mayer photos show Knepper “on the gas” in his No. 31 and receiving a huge trophy from USAC officials, including USAC Midget Director, Bob Stroud (on the left).

Well some one doesn't like cars. Your car loves you more than she ever will.

Lee Elkins was the entrant of the McNamara Special seen during qualifying runs for the 1954 Indianapolis 500. Behind the wheel is a happy “Iron” Mike Nazaruk after he placed the red and gold Kurtis Kraft 500C in the field with an eventual 14th starting spot. The 270” Offy powerplant enabled Mike to average 139.589 mph. In the race, a consistent drive enabled him to finish in fifth place after running 128.923 mph for the full 500 miles.

Looks like Art Chrisman is hard at work again collecting another admirer with his famous ride. This time he’s picking up the Class C Lakester trophy after setting a new class record of 120.80 mph at Paradise Mesa during the Polio Benefit Drags held on January 27, 1952[IMG]

It's always strange what combinations show up at the race track. Take the October 12, 1952, AAA Stock Car race at the Pomona Fairgrounds for example. Who would think of entering a '52 Nash Ambassador in a stock car race with hot shoe driver Johnny Mantz? The barge weighed in around 3,400 lbs and was powered by a 252.6” inline 6 and had a whopping 120 hp. Mix it all up with car owner J.C. Agajanian and you've got an interesting combo. Luck wasn't with the boys this day, as Mantz finished way down in 10th spot.

I grew up in Newhall Ca and the bus route use to take us by the set in the mornings. The show had been off the air for years but some of the orange chargers were still parked there. Was pretty cool for a young man.

An interesting photo. I sure would like to know more about the "Studebaker Special".

I don't remember ever having seen a two-door version of a Nash like this. Very interesting.
